"Excellent! Thank you for your hard work."
A powerful, deeply resonant voice echoed from within the office.
Dr. Lowe continued to bow and scrape as he stepped aside, finally revealing the man inside.
Owen froze, an icy chill running down his spine.
"Honey, what's wrong?" Yvonne asked, steadying his suddenly trembling shoulder.
"N-nothing," he stammered.
Whoever could terrify Owen like this had to be someone formidable. Yvonne squinted toward the door.
An imposing, military-clad man stepped out. He walked with his hands clasped behind his back, exuding a terrifying, unyielding aura. When his gaze swept the room, it hit Yvonne like a physical blow. She suddenly felt breathless.
Gathering her courage, she forced herself to look at him again. But the moment she met his eyes, she was overwhelmed. His gaze held the weight of a seasoned commander—authoritative and unyielding. In front of him, she felt as flimsy as a piece of paper. Instinctively, she lowered her head.
"Who is that?" she whispered.
"Vivian's dad," Owen muttered, his voice barely audible. "General Ward. The commander of the military district."
More people began filtering out of the room, their collective presence suffocating the space.
Forced to look up, Owen saw one of the General's guards carrying a young boy—Hugo.
Owen's eyes lit up with desperate hope. "Hugo!" he called out, trying to sound excited. If his son just acknowledged him, he could salvage some of his dignity in front of this terrifying crowd.
Hugo immediately turned his head away, presenting Owen with the back of his neck.
As General Ward approached, Owen didn't know what to do with his hands. He tried to laugh it off, using his son as a shield. "Hugo, why aren't you saying hello to your dad?"
Two more guards stepped out, and right behind them was Vivian Ward.
