A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1087

Fairfax's head was pounding. He genuinely wanted to sew Amos's mouth shut.

But Amos just kept going. "All this panic of yours right now? Honestly, it just looks incredibly hypocritical."

The word "hypocritical" struck Fairfax right in the chest, yanking painfully at his heartstrings.

Amos thought he was being a hypocrite. Did Starla think the same? Did she see his actions as totally fake?

She had to, right?

Every time he lost her, he suddenly remembered he needed to find her. How could she view that as anything other than hypocritical?

The suffocating feeling in his chest deepened.

"You're right," Fairfax whispered hoarsely. "To her, I'm just a hypocrite. She'll never forgive me."

What happened in Marina City was already unforgivable to her. And now this...

"You've probably lost her for good this time. Even if you drag her back, her heart won't come with her," Amos said callously. "And that's assuming she even survives Lazar!"

Amos was an expert at twisting the knife. Every word he spoke was meticulously aimed at Fairfax's most vulnerable spots.

Before Fairfax could even respond, Amos added, "Though, her chances are practically zero."

"Since Lazar hasn't demanded a ransom from you or Yardley, he's not looking to make a deal. If Yardley had received a call from Licht's camp, he wouldn't just be reacting now."

Lazar didn't want any leverage or benefits from them. That was the most terrifying part. When an enemy had no demands, it meant they only wanted one thing.

Blood.

He kept chanting to himself: No, she won't die. She's smart. She's resourceful. She'll find a way to survive and wait for me to save her. I promised I'd bring her back, so she has to wait for me.

Seeing the absolute agony contorting Fairfax's face, Amos let out a cold laugh. "She's probably dead already. We might not even find her body when we get there."

Fairfax's eyes turned bloodshot as he glared at Amos.

Amos was doing this on purpose. He wanted Fairfax to permanently memorize this exact feeling of sheer terror and suffocation. He wanted him to remember that this was all his own doing.

Over the past few weeks, Amos had realized just how deeply Fairfax cared for Starla. Yet, paradoxically, she was also the one person Fairfax seemed willing to sacrifice when push came to shove. He had abandoned her, time and time again.

"If you say one more word, I will actually sew your mouth shut!" Fairfax roared, completely unhinged.

"I'm just making sure you're mentally prepared," Amos replied smoothly.
