What right did he have?

"Because Yardley allowed him to take her. Why else?" Amos replied simply. Without Yardley's permission, Herbert couldn't have taken Starla anywhere.

Fairfax glared at him in icy silence.

Amos nodded. "Yeah. He handed over all his assets and power in Yoran Country to Yardley. He walked away with absolutely nothing."

Starla was gone, and it was as if Herbert had lost his will to fight for anything else. He just stubbornly let it all go.

Fairfax was stunned. He hadn't expected the man to surrender his entire empire.

"Comparing the two of you, it really looks like his feelings for her ran a lot deeper," Amos noted. It made everything Herbert had done to Starla previously in Yoran Country seem like a bizarre illusion. This absolute surrender was his truest devotion.
