Starla held his gaze, saying nothing.
"You consider everyone else's feelings and safety," he gritted out. "Tanya, Romy—everyone. But you never consider us."
She raised an eyebrow. She didn't consider anyone, actually.
Reading her silent defiance, his jaw clenched tighter. "You care about whether they live or die, but have you ever spared a thought for what's between us?"
"Between us?" she echoed softly. "Once, I did."
That word—once—felt like a knife twisting in his chest. In Marina City, he had genuinely earned her trust. She had started to open up to him. But then... the betrayals, the lies. It had pushed her further away than ever.
He took a ragged breath. "Can you really not let the past go?"
"When you did those things to me, did you honestly think I would just magically forget them?" she asked, her voice chillingly calm.
He felt the breath knocked out of him.
"You don't get to demand my amnesia, Herbert. When you made those choices, you should have prepared yourself for the worst possible outcome. Time doesn't just erase the damage."
"Then tell me what I'm supposed to do," he pleaded. "Isn't it good, just the two of us here?"
