Starla's phone vibrated on the nightstand. The screen lit up with Fairfax's name.
Her eyes went cold.
She glanced at Romy, grabbed the phone, and walked to the corner of the room to answer.
"You're not back."
Before she could even breathe, Fairfax's vicious, snarling voice filled her ear. The raw aggression in his tone sounded like he wanted to reach through the speaker and snap her neck.
"Or are you just too much of a coward to face me?"
"A coward?" Starla let out a dry, humorless laugh.
"What exactly do I have to be afraid of?"
She was exhausted. She was sick of the endless drama. But afraid? Not even slightly.
"Then why aren't you back?" he demanded, his voice shaking with rage.
"Because I absolutely loathe Marina City. Is that really so hard to understand?"
The revulsion in her voice was bone-deep.
Fairfax fell dead silent.
"You..."
"Let me guess," Starla cut him off smoothly. "You think I'm hiding because I feel guilty about your family dying?"
Starla scoffed. "Maybe my facts were wrong, but so what? They were casualties in a war. They didn't die innocent; they just lost the game."
"Starla!" Fairfax roared, the sound deafening in the small room.
How could she show zero remorse?
"They put me through hell, Fairfax. I just fought back. Did you honestly expect me to shed tears over them?"
Maybe, for a fleeting second when she realized her mother's death wasn't their fault, she had felt a twinge of guilt. She had even briefly considered trading her life to settle the score.
But then she remembered reality.
