A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 519

After hanging up with Yardley, Starla turned her attention to company matters. Now that Fairfax knew about her biotech firm, he was foolishly trying to pick a fight with her on this front as well.

It was a good thing she had anticipated this. From the very beginning of their marriage, she had kept her assets hidden from him. It was a lesson well learned: even when you are most in love, you should never completely lower your guard.

Starla was just thankful she hadn't laid all her cards on the table for Fairfax. If he had known the full extent of her resources, their fallout would have been far messier. Given his ruthless nature, he would have targeted her companies first, just as she was now systematically dismantling the Yelchin family.

Just as she was finishing up, Tanya Mercer arrived. Seeing Starla’s healthy glow, she smiled. “Looks like Herbert’s tonics are working wonders. Your complexion is so much better.”

At the mention of Herbert, Starla sighed. “We met at the wrong time.”

“Don’t say that,” Tanya chided gently. “Are you falling into that trap again?”

It was a common pitfall for women after a failed marriage, feeling like they were somehow unworthy of a good person. But was the failure really their fault?

Starla opened her mouth to say something, then thought better of it.

“I just don’t get why Herbert is so good to you,” Tanya mused. “A man like him could have any woman he wants.”

“True enough,” Tanya agreed. “So, when are you planning to go back to Yoran Country? And what’s the final plan for the Yelchins? You’re not just going to let them off the hook after all this, are you?”

“Let them off?” The words made Starla’s brow furrow. “How could I possibly let them off?”

“The day I return to Yoran Country,” she declared, her voice cold as ice, “is the day they lose their freedom for good.”

Right now, the Yelchins probably thought they were living through their worst nightmare. They were wrong. The moment she left, their fates would be sealed forever, with no hope of escape. The little bit of desperate fantasy they might still be clinging to would be utterly extinguished.
