A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 571

A heavy silence fell over the study.

The moment Fairfax appeared, Starla’s smile deepened, especially when she saw the icy fury brewing in his eyes.

She picked up her glass of water, settling in to enjoy the drama.

Brinley’s heart clenched as she met Fairfax’s piercing gaze.

“Fair… Fairfax…” Her lips trembled as she spoke, her own voice barely a whisper. She could only stare at him, a knot of terror tightening in her chest.

Fairfax remained frozen in the doorway, his legs feeling as if they were filled with lead. He refused to step inside.

His hands were clenched into tight fists, a dangerous aura radiating from him. “Whose child is it?”

Brinley felt as though a thousand needles had just pierced her heart, the pain so sharp it stole her breath.

Tears began to stream down her face.

This was her old trick. Whenever she was faced with an accusation or a line of questioning that put her at a disadvantage, she would resort to tears. And every time, without fail, the entire Yelchin family would soften.

After so many years living with them, she knew exactly which buttons to push.

But would it work this time?

And Felix… She now saw him for who he truly was and bitterly regretted ever meeting him. She even found herself thinking that if she hadn’t told Felix about Faraday's whereabouts, perhaps Faraday would still be alive. If Faraday hadn’t died, her position in the Yelchin family wouldn't be so precarious. The regret was overwhelming.

She hadn’t known what kind of person Felix was back then. He had always showered her with sweet words and promises as long as she was useful to him. But the moment he realized she could no longer provide him with any benefits from the Yelchin family or Yelchin Group, he’d turned on her in an instant.

Her mother was useless, and so was Felix. The only person she could possibly count on now was Fairfax.

But now… he had clearly overheard her conversation with Starla. That had to be why he was looking at her this way.

It was all deliberate.

Starla had done this on purpose. She must have known Fairfax was standing right outside the door and brought up the baby to sow doubt in his mind.
