"His mother told me to leave him," Tanya said flatly.

"Okay, that's standard rich-mom protocol. That shouldn't have caused a nuclear meltdown between you two." Throwing money at undesirable girlfriends was basically a competitive sport in their social circles. "You had to know that was coming when you started dating him."

"She offered me a hundred bucks to leave him. Am I just supposed to swallow that?"

"A million bucks? I mean, you don't have to be mad, it's just how they solve problems—"

"Not a million. A hundred bucks. One hundred."

Caden froze. His brain completely short-circuited. "A hundred... bucks?" He stared at her, a muscle in his cheek twitching. He had to have misheard. Was the woman insulting Tanya, or was she implying her own son was only worth a Benjamin?

"Yes. A hundred bucks," Tanya confirmed grimly.

Once Caden realized she was serious, he tried to hold it in, but the sheer absurdity was too much. "Pfft... hahahaha!" He burst into hysterical laughter.

"I don't get it," Caden gasped, wiping a tear from his eye. "Did she think that was a massive flex? Hahaha!"

"Isn't it supposed to be an insult to me?" Tanya asked, her anger replaced by genuine confusion. Anyone would feel humiliated by that.

"She practically roasted her own kid! Hahaha!"

Tanya suddenly understood why Starla found Caden's bizarre sense of humor endearing. He had a way of taking a devastatingly toxic situation and turning it into a complete joke.
