A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 894

If Starla was the only obstacle, the mission was straightforward enough. But Rudolf didn't approve of the heavy-handed approach.

"Shouldn't you at least try talking to Ms. Lansbury first?" Rudolf ventured. "Taking her by force... it won't look good."

Things between the two of them were already incredibly volatile. If Herbert forced her onto a plane to the Black Sea, Starla would inevitably assume the worstโ€”that he was planning to hurt her. She wouldn't just lose faith in Herbert; she'd be utterly disgusted with the Hoggart family for allowing it to happen.

Hearing Rudolf's warning, Herbert pinched the bridge of his nose, an incoming headache pulsing behind his eyes. "Just get the car ready."

He was losing his damn mind over this woman.

Half an hour later, Herbert strode into the Hoggart estate. Starla had just finished her meal and was feeling incredibly satisfied. It had been a long time since she'd been in such a good mood.

But the second she saw Herbert, the genuine smile on her face completely vanished.

Herbert noticed the drastic shift in her expression, and a flare of irritation ignited in his chest. Clearly, she was still furious with him.

"Are you here to interrogate me too?" Starla demanded. "I didn't kill Brinley!"

She hadn't bothered to defend herself in front of Yardley because, at the time, she honestly hadn't known the truth. But right after her brother walked away, she had received the text. Her five million was still sitting safely in her account. She had nothing to do with it.

If anyone was to blame, it was Brinley herself for making so many enemies. Brinley had a special talent for pissing off dangerous people, often with lethal consequences. Hell, she owed Starla two lives as it was.

"It wasn't you?" Herbert's voice dripped with blatant disbelief.

Starla caught the tone immediately. A cold, mocking smirk curved her lips. "Whether you believe me or not, I had absolutely nothing to do with it. Though, I have to admit, I really wanted her dead."

It was actually a shame, she thought bitterly. To know she hadn't been the one to personally end the woman.

Herbert's jaw tightened. He didn't say a word, but his dark, scrutinizing gaze made it obvious he still didn't buy it.

"Well, she's dead now," Starla said flippantly. "If you're here to demand a life for a life, I have nothing to say to you."
