And just as I swallowed my first mouthful of that divine soup, Hebert spoke. “So,” he started, his voice breaking the tension like a knife, “have you given any more thought to what I brought up last night?”
“I’m sorry, what?” I choked out, coughing violently as the soup almost went down the wrong pipe. Embarrassed, I grabbed a napkin, covering my mouth, and shot him a glare full of shock. “Can you repeat that?”
Hebert calmly set down his silver fork and knife. A faint, exasperated smile flickered in his deep, dark eyes.
“Ashley, do you know what animal you remind me of right now?” His voice was calm, teasing even.
Annoyed, I scrunched up my eyebrows, unable to hide my irritation. “Why do you always bring up animals? Fine, tell me what
animal?”
“An ostrich,” he said flatly, his tone so sure it was almost infuriating. “The moment you’re faced with anything emotionally difficult, you just bury your head in the sand and hope it all goes away.”
He stood up from his chair with deliberate slowness, stretching to his full height, his movements smooth and deliberate. That cold cedarwood–like scent of his hit me as he took measured steps toward me, each one making my heart race just a little faster.
“Listen to me, Ashley,” he said, his voice steady, leaving no room for argument. He stopped right next to me, his tall frame looming, all commanding presence and raw intensity. “Yes, I had a few drinks last night. But everything I said—I meant it. Every. Single. Word. I know exactly how I feel, and I am not messing around.”
When he said those words, his strikingly handsome face leaned in closer. I could clearly feel his warm breath grazing my cheek.
My heart went completely out of control again, and my mind just turned into a blank, empty wasteland.
“You… you promised me yesterday. You said you’d give me three days!” I somehow managed to find my voice, staring straight at him. “It’s not even close to three days yet!”
Hebert paused his movement immediately, pulling back slightly. He nodded gently, his demeanor calm.
“Alright. I completely respect your wishes.” His lips curved into that irresistible smile of his. “Since we still have three days, why don’t we handle some other pressing issues first.”
“Other issues?” I looked at him in confusion, my brows knitting together tightly.
Hebert slid back into his seat, crossing his hands neatly on the table in front of him. “Yes. If we go by the exact timing, your bond with Brian should be about to reach the point where it can be fully severed.”
He stopped for a moment, his gaze sharpening. “Also, last night, in the hallway by the restroom, I heard/every word of your conversation with that worthless guy. You’ve made your refusal pretty clear.”
I inhaled sharply, caught completely off guard. “I’d be more than happy to leverage Bloodmoon Pack’s authority to expedite your divorce and sever all ties for good.” Hebert glanced at the sleek Patek Philippe watch on his wrist, his tone calm and composed. “Just pick a time, and I’ll make sure everything, legally and within pack boundaries, is handled immediately.”
“Then the sooner, the better,” I responded decisively, my voice firm with finality. Ending things with Brian was long overdue.
A flicker of satisfaction crossed Hebert’s eyes, but he quickly held up a slender finger, an almost solemn look settling on his face. “However,” he said, his tone firm and unwavering, “there’s an additional request I need to make at this critical point.”
I tensed, watching him carefully and waiting for the catch.
“It’s not just about cutting all ties with Brian and Blackwood Pack,” Hebert said, his voice dropping, each word weighted with authority. “Ashley, I’m asking you to officially join my territory. Become a recognized member of Bloodmoon Pack.”
That… completely caught me off guard.
