“I don’t need a Darcy rightness,” I said with a small, bitter smile. “Honestly, I’d rather be Scarlett Someone who faces everything head–on and isn’t afraid to fight back when it counts.”

But even Scarlett couldn’t stop herself from chasing after a love that was nothing more thar an illusion throwing herself into it again and again, like a moth to a flame. And I wasn’t any better. No matter how much I told myself otherwise, my thoughts drifted, again and again, to one name Brian.

Had he really felt nothing for me? Come on, even if I’d just been his packmate, his subordinate, as Alpha, he must’ve heard about the attack from the patrols. When he saw the destruction at the scene, did it never cross his mind that I might’ve been caught in all of that chaos?

“Where’s my phone?” I asked Vicki, snapping back to the moment.

Vicki grabbed my phone from the bedside table and handed it to me. The moment my fingertips brashed the cold screen, it lit up. A long list of missed calls, all in glaring red, lined up like scars that would never heal.

Every single one was from the same person.

I had reached out to him in desperation, calling for help again and again. But him–the man who used to be my husband, the father of my child–chose instead to comfort another woman with a twisted ankle. He didn’t hesitate, didn’t even question it. He condemned me as if I were just some spiteful, jealous liar.

It felt like my heart had been crushed in a vice grip.

Vicki must’ve noticed how upset I was and pulled me into a tight hug. Anger flared in her voice as she cursed, “Don’t look at that anymore, babe. That worthless jerk! I heard from one of the nurses yesterday that he spent the whole afternoon taking care of Silvia–peeling fruit for her, giving her water. He doesn’t deserve you, not one bit!”

I forced myself to take a deep breath, pushing the tears back. “It’s okay, Vicki.” My voice came out steady, almost unnervingly calm. “I’ve already made up my mind. I’ll let him go completely. I just… need a little time. It hurts, yeah, but it’s shown me things for what they really are.”

Yeah, it’s clearer now. That last bit of foolish, pathetic love I had for him died the moment he hung up on me. “I know you will. ” Vicki looked at me, her voice soft with concern. “That’s just who you are. Once you make up your mind, there’s no turning back. She paused, then added, “But seriously, since Brian’s proven himself to be a complete lost cause, why not consider someone better? Like Hebert, maybe?”

She started ticking off points on her fingers, sounding like a salesperson. “Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack One of the youngest, strongest leaders across North America! I stayed quiet. Everything Vicki said was true. But I just couldn’t.

“Vicki,” I said, meeting her eyes and speaking carefully, “I just got out of a failed marriage that left me shattered. After my father passed, I thought Brian was my everything, my safe harbor. But reality slapped me hard in the face.”

I let my gaze drift toward the window, my voice softening. “And now, here I am, struggling again. I can’t rely on another man to save me. I need to find my own strength, to get out of this mess on my own, and build a future for me and my child–a future where I don’t have to depend on anyone. I know I can do it.”

“And besides,” I let out a bitter laugh, “just like you said, Hebert is such an outstanding Alpha. And me? A divorced, pregnant she -wolf abandoned by her husband. The gap between us is just… too big, Vicki. I don’t have that kind of confidence.”
