Ashley’s POV
The sharp smell of disinfectant hit my nose, pulling me out of the suffocating darkness Fragments of memory flashed through my mind like shattered glass–ear–splitting motorcycle roars, the disgusting grin on that rogue werewolf’s face, and… the call
that got cut off.
My baby!
A wave of icy fear gripped my chest, far worse than the despair I’d felt during the attack. I snapped my eyes open and instinctively reached for my belly.
“Whoa, hey! Take it easy, sweetheart!” A warm hand covered mine, and Vicki’s worried face came into focos. “Are you okay?”
“My baby…” My voice came out rough, like scraping sandpaper. “Vicki, is my baby… is he okay?” Hot tears rolled down my face as I clung tightly to her hand.
“Of course, he’s perfectly fine.” Vicki’s grip on my hand tightened, her voice steady and full of reassurance. “Listen, Ashley, your little pup is tough. The most important thing is, you’re both safe now.”
My body, which had been tense all this time, suddenly gave out, and I broke down into uncontrollable sobs. All the fear, humiliation, and lingering dread spilled out with my tears.
Vicki didn’t say a word. She just held me quietly, gently patting my back, staying like that until my cries gradually subsided.
“When I was brought to the hospital… it was bad, wasn’t it?” I asked, still sniffling.
Vicki’s expression darkened. “It was critical. But you owe it all to Hebert,” she continued, her voice laced with a mixture of awe and admiration. “He showed up just in time and rushed you to the hospital.”
Hebert? The name sent a jolt through me. The Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack? The very man I had been trying to avoid… what was he doing there?
“You and Hebert, huh? There’s definitely something going on,” Vicki nudged me playfully, her tone dripping with teasing. “The way he carried you into the ER last night–oh my god, it was like straight out of a movie. The look in his eyes? Like he’d hand you the entire world if he could. Come on, spill! Why didn’t you ever mention you knew Hebert?”
My memories were instantly swept back ten years…
Ten years ago, he was just a sixteen–year–old boy who had lost everything. begged my father to help the orphaned, helpless Hebert, and my father took him in. He lived with us at our Alpha Manor for six whole months.

During that time, he was always around me, like my shadow. I can still remember the way he looked at me–like I was something sacred. That earnest, almost worshipful gaze, filled with emotions I couldn’t begin to understand back then.
I thought it was just gratitude. I mean, I was the one who saved him, right? It only made sense he’d feel thankful.
I never paid much attention to that gaze, even found it a little annoying how he always followed me silently. I’d flirt with other boys, dance with someone else at the ball, completely ignoring the flash of pain in his eyes.
Back then, I was too young, too naive to understand what love really was. I thought love should be dramatic, like the fairy tales, not the quiet, deep way he looked at me.
Then he disappeared, without a word, without a goodbye.
Three years ago, the front page of the Wolves‘ Daily dropped a bombshell–Bloodmoon Pack on the West Coast had a new Alpha. The man didn’t inherit the role by blood but took it through the most brutal, primal challenge, defeating the former leader.
He was the youngest Alpha in our history to seize power. When I saw his photo, I could barely breathe.
