Chapter 170
She let out a laugh, bitter and dripping with sarcasm. “Close? Sure, but that doesn’t mean you get to trample all over my boundaries, Hebert! You throved my things like they didn’t matter. You delayed my work schedule without asking! Don’t try to paint this like respect, because it’s not!”
“I respect you, Ashley, I do!” I shot back, my voice firm but controlled. “I’ve given you massive resources, I’ve supported all your plans! All I want is to share a room with you, to hold you when the day’s worn us both out. I can’t see how anything I did was wrong!”
“Respect? What a joke!” she shouted at me, her voice shaking with rage. Her fury spilled over into a brutal verdict: “We have nothing between us except work and sex! Hear me, Hebert–nothing! Who gave you the right to intrude into my life like this?”
Nothing between us.
Those simple, cutting words hit me harder than anything.
I thought we were close enough.
But to her, we’re nothing?
I stormed out of the manor, heading straight for Marcus’s villa.
Marcus was lounging with a cup of espresso in hand, dressed in a sharp tailored suit that practically screamned sophistication. His sharp eyes caught my sour expression immediately, lighting up with amusement as he realized the drama I brought with me. “Well, look what we have here dark storm clouds rolling in,” Marcus said with a theatrical whistle, pulling out a chair as he sat down. “Let me guess, our grand Alpha just got back from the romantic honeymoon phase, only to crash and burn spectacularly. Tell me, Hebert, did our lovely Ashley finally snap under your suffocating need to control everything?”
“Shut up, Marcus,” 1 growled, lowering my voice into a cold warning. “Unless you’re eager for me to ship you off to the borders again, I suggest you drop the act now.”
Marcus didn’t bat an eye at my intimidating glare. He casually sipped his coffee, the smirk on his face as infuriating as ever. Come on, Hebert. What happened? Did she turn down your proposal or kick you off that oversized velvet bed?”
“She accused me of controlling her life and shouted that we have no real relationship!” I erupted, my voice loud and unrestrained as I shot up from my chair in anger.
1
“I just kindly moved her stuff into my bedroom! I only asked Boris to push back her schedule a tiny bit–it wouldn’t have caused any problems! I did all of this so we could spend more time together! But she treated me like some arrogant tyrant!”
Marcus shook his head, his expression full of mock sympathy, “Hebert, you might be brilliant when it comes to leading the pack, but when it comes to relationships, you’re as clueless as they come. You stomped all over her boundaries and expected her to thank you for it? Seriously?”
“Thank me? I don’t need her gratitude! I just need her by my side!” I barked, cutting him off sharply. Planting my hands firmly on the table, I gave him a hard stare, my tone resolute. “I won’t back down to her. She’s the one who crossed the line and burt me. She needs to understand how hard life is without my protection.”
I took a deep breath, my tone icy as 1 delivered my final verdict: “Listen, Marcus. From now on, there’s no way I’m making the first move. Unless she comes to me, apologizes, and takes back that ridiculous ‘nothing between us‘ line, I won’t even acknowledge her! Not with a glance, not even with the tiniest shred of attention.”
