Chapter 42

Silvia’s POV

“My Alpha, my husband, he’ll be here soon to fix everything for me.”

That thought echoed in my mind over and over, like some sacred mantra holding up the crumbling pieces of my dignity. I stood there in that cursed boutique, stiff as a statue awarding judgment, while all those smug stares circled me like annoying flies,

trying to crawl all over me.

But I didn’t care.

Brian was coming. He’d show up like some god descended from the heavens, his Alpha presence so commanding it’d silence every single one of these petty people. He’d toss out a black card, like it was nothing, and then he’d look at me with those eyes that were always so gentle-just for me–and tell me it’s all taken care of.

He’d come. He had to.

So I waited. One minute, two minutes… Each second dragged on like sticky, slow caramel, testing my patience. My mind flashed to Ashley and her Beta friend, the way they’d glanced at me earlier-pity written all over them. That pity cut deeper than any of the mocking whispers around me.

Finally, the store’s chime went off.

My heart jumped, and a triumphant smile was already tugging at my lips.

But the person who walked in wasn’t Brian.

It was Kael. Brian’s assistant.

Kael’s face was the usual cold, unreadable mask. Without saying anything extra, he walked straight up to me and handed over a black card. His actions felt as casual as dealing with some routine paperwork.

“Ms. Silvia, Alpha asked me to give this to you. He has an urgent meeting and can’t make it here at the moment.”

The smile on my face froze instantly.

It felt like my blood had turned to ice, cold and still like the frozen rivers of Alaska.

An urgent meeting? A meeting that was apparently more important than me, his wife, his Luna, standing here being humiliated?

A sharp, piercing pain of neglect stabbed deep into my heart. All I wanted to do was fling that ridiculous card back in Kael’s face and scream, demanding to know what Brian saw me as. Just some trouble he could solve with money?

But I couldn’t do that.

I caught the fleeting look of disdain in the shop assistant’s eyes. That alone was enough to hold me back, to swallow all of it

down.

Right now, I had to stay composed, play the part of the considerate, gracious, and ever-understanding future Luna.

“Of course, pack business always comes first,” I forced a sweet smile onto my face and took the card from him. My tone was syrupy as I added, “Please thank Brian for me, Kael. And thank you as well for coming all the way here.”

I used Brian’s card, that symbol of his authority, to pay for the destroyed dress. Then, like a soldier retreating after a crushing defeat, I fled from that wretched store as quickly as I could.

I didn’t wait for Brian, and I couldn’t even bring myself to ask about the charity banquet.

I wandered aimlessly down Rodeo Drive, clutching the bag that held one hundred thousand dollars’ worth of useless fabric. I felt like a complete joke. The sunlight was so blinding that it made my head spin, and my stomach churned with jealousy and

frustration.

God, this isn’t how it’s supposed to be.

This is just awful.

Lately, it’s been one mess after another. Every time, I thought I was making the best decision, that things would finally turn around.

But no, it always ends in disaster.

And the reason for everything? Ashley!

It’s all her fault!!

That’s when my eyes caught the glass window of a French restaurant at the street corner.

Ashley.

And… Hebert.

They were sitting by the window. The afternoon sunlight wrapped around them like a golden veil, soft and warm. Hebert was leaning slightly toward her, looking at her with this focused, tender expression I’d never seen on any man before. And Ashley- ugh, that woman-was smiling. Not just any smile, either. It was carefree, radiant, coming straight from her heart. A kind of

smile I’d never seen from her before.
