Chapter 55
Ashley’s POV
The sugary facade vanished from Cecilia’s face in an instant, revealing the cold, sharp edge beneath. Her carefully painted red lips curled into a sneer overflowing with hostility.
“I don’t care what name you go by-stay away from Hebert.”
At last, she dropped the act. Honestly, I felt relieved. I could deal with blatant malice better than fake smiles.
“There’s someone in his heart,” she stepped closer, her expensive perfume mixed with the bitter stench of jealousy wrapping around me like a serpent. “Someone he’s loved for years. Even I-an only daughter of the Darkriver Pack’s leader-couldn’t replace her place in his heart. And you?” She eyed me head to toe, her gaze like she was inspecting some bargain-bin reject. “An Omega still carrying another Alpha’s scent, one who’s been discarded-what makes you think you even stand a chance?”
Here we go again. Seriously?
My stomach churned, not out of jealousy, but from a sickening, all-too-familiar fatigue. An Alpha and the woman he could never get over. How many times do I have to live through this damn cliché?
For a brief moment, a faint discomfort rippled through me-like a feather brushing against my heart, leaving a tiny sting. I had thought Hebert was different, but in the end, he was just another Alpha shackled by his past.
I shoved that flicker of unnecessary emotion aside, steeled myself as cold, unyielding Rebecca. “So, this is your game plan?” I said coolly, locking eyes with her. “Because you can’t win his heart, you’ve decided to see every female wolf around him as an imaginary rival?”
I stepped closer, pushing back against the oppressive air she exuded, my gaze drilling straight into hers. “It’s obvious he… barely notices you. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be this insecure-snapping at anyone who comes near him like some yappy little
Chihuahua.”
“You!” My words hit their mark, and Cecilia’s face flushed bright red. “What do you even know?! Do you have any idea how many female wolves would do anything to get close to him? But me-only me-I’m the one who gets to stay by his side as his secretary! And that’s not for no reason!”
She raised her voice, as if trying to make a point, with an unmistakable tone of arrogance: “Hebert wouldn’t have become Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack without my father and the Darkriver Pack!”
Repaying favors. Securing power.
I’ve had enough of these so-called bonds built on “gratitude” and “indebtedness.” Brian trampled on my dignity as Luna just to repay Silvia’s “life-saving favor.” And now Hebert has to tolerate having a woman he doesn’t love playing the role of devoted partner, all for the sake of power consolidation.
These supposedly strong Alphas-when it comes to their feelings-are no better than hormonal teenagers, messy and stupid beyond belief.
“So, Cecilia,” I had run out of patience to entertain her anymore, “rest assured, I am not your enemy. I couldn’t care less about
him.”
