This room held so much that Brian never gave me. It wasn’t about money or status; it was the feeling of being cherished, of truly being understood.

But then, like a cold, unfeeling prison guard, reason struck me hard, stabbing through my heart that was so close to giving in. I instantly stumbled backward, forcing myself to step away from the warm, dangerous illusion before it could pull me in.

“Don’t get the wrong idea.” Hebert, as if sensing my internal struggle, leaned against the doorframe, his face showing a tired, almost mocking smile. “I’m just really fed up with all the mess in the pack. If you could help me sort out those damned accounts and handle the personnel issues, then my little effort here wouldn’t feel like a total waste.”

He made it seem like nothing but a deal, just a simple favor.

Somehow, those words loosened the tense knot in my chest. A deal. That I could work with. Deals were clear, fair, not messy and full of betrayal like emotions.

I quietly pushed down the storm brewing inside me and lifted my chin, putting on a perfectly practiced smile-cold, calculated, the kind of smile “Rebecca” would wear. “To express my gratitude for your generosity, Alpha, I’ll do my best to help. But to truly understand how the estate runs, I’ll need to take a look around first.”

“Of course.” A flicker of approval flashed in Hebert’s eyes.

He personally took me through the extravagant banquet hall, the impeccably organized kitchen, and the garden trimmed like a piece of art. He patiently explained everything, detailed and thorough.

As we passed by his office, a stunning wolf woman in a professional skirt suit strutted towards us in high heels, her face brimming with enthusiasm.

“Alpha!” Her voice was as sweet as syrup, yet her gaze scanned me from head to toe like a laser. “This must be the famous Rebecca! I’ve heard so much about you-turns out you’re even more gorgeous than your photos!”

She extended her hand to me. “Hello, I’m Hebert’s secretary, Cecilia.”

We shook hands briefly. Her fingertips were ice-cold, and her heavily made-up eyes glimmered with an overly eager, discomfiting intensity.

“Alpha, the elders are already waiting for you,” she said, turning to Hebert with a tone full of concern. “How about I take over and show Rebecca around? You really shouldn’t keep them waiting.”

Hebert glanced at me to gauge my thoughts.

Since I was merely a guest in this entirely unfamiliar place, I wasn’t about to be difficult. So I nodded, “It’s fine. Go ahead, Hebert. I’m sure Cecilia will be a lovely guide.”

Hebert nodded at my words and turned to walk into his office.

As soon as he left, the warm smile on Cecilia’s face faded slightly, replaced by an openly critical look.

“Rebecca,” she said casually while leading me forward, her tone almost too casual to be innocent. “I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before. Have we met?”

My chest tightened instantly.
