I turned to her, finally getting the strength to bite back. “Why are you suddenly helping me? What’s in it for you?”

She smiled and ruffled my hair. “You are actually not as dumb as I thought you were. Let’s just say, me and this ghost have some unfinished business. He has something that belongs to me. And I

want it back.”

I was going to ask her what, but I knew better. She would tell me when she was ready, and not a

second before.

“And as for you,” she continued, her eyes a little too knowing for comfort. “You know I don’t do

things out of the goodness of my heart. In return for my help, you will do something for me. A

small task, really. You will infiltrate Dominic’s pack.”

My blood ran cold. Dominic. Of course. It always came back to him. She wasn’t just cleaning up my mess; she was using it as an opportunity. A chance to get her claws into the one thing I had ever

truly wanted, the one thing she knew she could use to control me.

“I don’t understand,” I said, my mind trying to catch up. “Infiltrate them? Why?”

“The werewolves are getting too powerful, too bold,” she said, her voice low and serious.

“Dominic’s father is a fool, but Dominic… he is a different story. He is a threat. A threat to my

businesses, a threat to our way of life. I need to know what he’s planning. I need an inside source.

Someone he trusts.”

She looked at me, her eyes boring into mine. “And who better than the girl who is hopelessly in love

with him?”

I hated her in that moment. I hated her for seeing through me, for using my feelings as a weapon. I

hated her for putting me in this impossible position. But I also knew I had no choice. I was a chess

piece in her game, and she had just made her move.

“He’ll never trust me,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “Not after what happened. Not after

Jonathan.”

“He will,” she said, her voice confident. “You just have to play your part right. You have me to thank that he isn’t finding out about the boy you killed, or any chances you might have had with that

mongrel would have been long gone. I had a little chat with a friend of mine at the council, and

they are now looking into the incident. It will be ruled as a ‘rogue vampire attack’ Incase they find the body. For now. But that could change. And I will make sure it changes if you don’t do as I say.”

<CHAPTER HUNDRED-THIRTYEIGHT

She was blackmailing me. Again. She was holding my life, my future, over my head. And I was letting her. Because I was a coward. Because I was weak.

I looked at her, my eyes pleading. I was ready to beg. I was ready to do whatever it took to get out

of this hell. I was ready to swallow my pride, my hatred, my everything. I was ready to be her little puppet, if only she would let me live.

“What do you want me to do?” I asked, my voice hollow.

“I want you to get close to him,” she said, her voice a low purr. “I want you to be his confidante, his lover. I want you to know his every move, his every thought. I want you to be my eyes and ears in the wolf’s den. And when the time is right, you will help me destroy him.”

She paused, a cruel smile playing on her lips. “And who knows? Maybe you’ll even enjoy it. A little revenge for all the times he chose someone else over you.”

She was right. A part of me, a dark, twisted part of me, did want that. A part of me wanted to see him suffer, to feel the same pain and rejection that I had felt. But I also knew that it was a lie, a carefully constructed fantasy to hide the truth. The truth was that I still loved him. And that was my greatest weakness.

“You will report to me,” she continued, her voice all business now. “Every day. You will tell me everything. And you will not fail me. Because if you do, I will make sure that your blackmailer is the least of your problems. I will make your death look like a mercy killing. Do you understand me?”

I nodded, my head heavy with the heaviness of her words. I was trapped. I had traded one cage for another, one master for another. But at least this one came with a chance of survival.

“Good,” she said, a look of satisfaction on her face. “Now, get out of my sight. And don’t come back until you have something useful for me. You look weak. Go feed. And for god’s sake, take a shower. You smell like burnt flesh and desperation.”

She dismissed me with a wave of her hand, her attention already back on the papers on her desk. I was nothing to her. A tool. A means to an end. And I had just agreed to be her weapon.

I stumbled out of the study, my mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. I was a wreck, a mess of conflicting loyalties and desires. I was a monster, a pawn in a game I didn’t understand. And I was about to walk back into the lion’s den, with a target on my back and a secret that could destroy me

all over again.

I went to my room, the blood she gave me singing in my veins, restoring my strength. I took a long, hot shower, the steam fogging up the mirror, my reflection a blurry, distorted image of the girl I used to be. I was a stranger in my own skin, a ghost haunting my own life.
