CHAPTER HUNDRED-SIXTY

HAILEY

The drive to the hospital was a nightmare. We were all horrified, not knowing if we should think about the worst or be optimistic, but it was hard. My mind was racing, a whirlwind of fear and fury.

Giovanni. He was like the brother I never had. Always been there for me even when Dominic

wasn’t. Our friendship wasn’t as deep as it used to be anymore because we were both occupied with our personal lives, he now had a family and I did too.

Valerie.

Ever since we broke the news to her, she has been in a state of shock, refusing to speak, her face a pale, blank mask. She was in the backseat, staring out the window, her body rigid, her hands clenched into fists. I wanted to comfort her, to tell her it would be okay, but the words wouldn’t

come. Because I didn’t know if it would be okay.

Dominic was driving like a man possessed, his knuckles white on the steering wheel, his jaw set in a grim line. He hadn’t said a word since we got in the car, but I could feel the storm raging inside

him, a tempest of grief and rage.

We didn’t know what to expect when we get to the hospital, we were just hoping it wasn’t as bad as they said. Maybe he is breathing now. Maybe they have stabilized him. Maybe it was all a misunderstanding. A million ‘maybes’ ran through my mind, each one more desperate than the

last.

We were hanging on by a thread.

As we screeched to a halt in the hospital’s emergency drop off zone, Valerie was the first to get out. She didn’t wait for the car to fully stop. She threw the door open and sprinted towards the entrance, a wild, desperate look in her eyes. Dominic and I were right behind her, our hearts pounding in our chests.

The emergency room was a chaotic mess…beeping machines, hushed whispers, and hurried footsteps. The air was thick with the scent of antiseptic and fear. We found the reception desk, a harried looking woman with tired eyes and a strained smile.

“We’re here for Giovanni King,” Dominic said, his voice strained. “There was a car accident.”

The woman typed something into her computer, her brow furrowed in concentration. “I’ll page the doctor,” she said, her tone professional but not unkind.

We were told to wait. And wait we did. The minutes stretched into an eternity, each second an agonizing tick of the clock. Valerie was pacing back and forth, a caged animal, her anxiety was out of this world. I was scared that she would pass out if she didn’t calm down. Dominic was standing by the window, his back to us, his shoulders slumped, a picture of defeat.

I wanted to scream, to break something, to lash out at the injustice of it all. This couldn’t be happening. Not Giovanni. Not now. Not like this.

My mind went back to Yasmine. To the smug look on her face when Dominic dragged her away from the pool. This couldn’t be a coincidence. It couldn’t. But it was. It had to be. The timing was too perfect, too cruel. She was at the pool with us. She was with Dominic. She couldn’t have

orchestrated this.

Could she?

Just as the thought took root, a doctor in blood splattered scrubs walked towards us, his expression grave. He was a young man, with kind eyes and a tired face, the kind of face that had

seen too much.

“Are you the family of Giovanni King?” he asked, his voice gentle.

Dominic stepped forward, his Alpha persona kicking in, a wall of strength for the rest of us. “We

are,” he said, his voice steady. “How is he?”

The doctor hesitated, choosing his words with care “He’s… stable. For now. But it’s not good. He sustained massive internal injuries. We had to perform emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. He’s in a medically induced coma to reduce the swelling on his brain. We can’t tell what’s next. The next twenty four hours will be critical. The next forty eight will be a godsend.”

Valerie let out a choked sob, her legs giving out from under her. I caught her, holding her as she

trembled, her body wracked with a grief so profound it was a physical thing.

“Can we see him?” I asked, my own voice shaking.

The doctor shook his head. “I can only allow one person to see him at this time. He is in the ICU.”

“You should go,” Dominic said to Valerie, patting her back. She looked at him, her eyes shining with

gratefulness as she followed the doctor down the hallway, her small frame looking fragile and

broken.

I couldn’t begin to imagine the pain that she was feeling right now. I had to be there for her. I had to

be strong for her. But I was scared. So damn scared.

As soon as they were gone, the rage that I had been suppressing came rushing back, a tidal wave

of fury that threatened to consume me. I turned to Dominic, my eyes blazing.

“This was her,” I snarled, my voice low and dangerous. “This was Yasmine. I know it.”

Dominic looked at me, his face a mask of pain and confusion. “Hailey, we don’t know that. It could

have been a random accident. A drunk driver. Anything.”

“Don’t be naive, Dominic,” I shot back, my anger rising. “This is her calling card. A distraction. A

message. She knew we were getting close to the truth about the coven, about her mother, about
