It’s not a miracle. Not yet. He’s not waking up. But he’s in there. He’s fighting.

“I’m here,” I say, my voice stronger now, filled with a renewed purpose. “I’m here, Giovanni. I’ll go call the doctor and the others. I love you.”
I ran out of the room, my heart pounding against my ribs. I found the nurse’s station, my words tumbling over each other in my haste. “He squeezed my hand. He squeezed my hand!”
The nurse, a kind faced woman named Carol, followed me back to the room, her expression calm but hopeful. She checked his vitals, made notes on her tablet, and told me the doctors would be
here soon.
When they finally came, there was a flurry of activity, the machines beeping, the nurses talking to each other in rapid medical jargon I could barely follow. But the doctor smiled at me, his eyes crinkling at the corners, and said the words that were a balm to my soul.
“We’re going to bring him out of the coma. We’ll still need the ventilator for a while, but it’s a
promising sign.”
The room spun around me. Tears blurred my vision, I pressed my palm against his, relishing the feel of his skin against mine. He was here. He was coming back to me. I couldn’t have asked for a
greater gift.
And as much as I hated it, there was a dark, vengeful part of me that was glad he was still here, that the universe hadn’t taken him from me. Because once he was healed, once he was awake, nothing would stop us from finding out who had done this. And they would pay.
They would pay in blood.
HAILEY
It’s been two days
Two excruciating, torturous days.
We were all trying to keep it together, but the truth was, the longer we waited, the more we were falling apart. Valerie was a ghost of herself, barely eating, barely sleeping, her grief etched into the
hollows of her face, the shadows under her eyes.
My phone rang as I fed baby Phoenix from his bottle, Valerie’s name popped up on the screen. My stomach knotted. Had something happened? I grabbed the phone with my free hand, the fear
making my blood run cold.
“Hey,” I said, my voice cracking.
“Hailey.” Valerie’s voice sounded thick with tears, but there was a note of something else,

something that made me sit up straight.
“Val? Is everything okay? Is it the baby?” I asked, panic rising in my throat.

“He moved, Hailey. He squeezed my hand.” Her words tumbled out in a rush, the tears now clearly
joyful. “The doctor is bringing him out of the coma. We’ll still have to stay here a little longer, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
I let out a shaky breath, tears blurring my vision. I was happy. Thrilled. But there was also a sliver of
dread, the memory of the car crash, of Yasmine’s face, and the nagging suspicion that something
was not quite right.
“That’s wonderful news, Val. Truly. I’m so happy for you. For both of you.” I paused, unsure of what
to say next. “Have you told the others?”
“No, not yet. I wanted to tell you first. Please, inform the others.”
I agreed, and ended the call. I looked at the baby, a beautiful baby boy, a symbol of love and hope,
and couldn’t help the smile that bloomed on my face.
“Your daddy is a fighter, Phoenix,” I said softly, pressing a kiss to his tiny forehead. “I hope he wakes up soon, and I promise you, the moment he does, I’m going to kill the bitch that did this.”
As soon as I was done at home, Dominic and I dressed up and headed to the hospital, my heart
lighter than it had been in days. Dominic’s cold figure had eased up the moment I told him the news. His face had softened, his smile genuine for the first time in what seemed like forever.
Valerie met us at the door, her eyes red rimmed, but her face had kind of hope that had been missing for too long. She hugged us both tightly, her relief very obvious.
