CHAPTER HUNDREDSEVENTYTWO

HAILEY

The following weeks were perfect. We fell into a comfortable routine, a bubble of happiness and tranquility

that was as fragile as it was beautiful.

We spent our days on the beach, swimming in the ocean, building sandcastles with Liam, and our nights were filled with passion and intimacy, a celebration of our love and commitment.

Dominic was true to his word. He didn’t bring up Yasmine’s death again, and for a while, I was able to push the fear and uncertainty to the back of my mind. I was able to pretend that we were just a normal family,

living a normal life, free from the darkness and the danger that had plagued us for so long.

But the illusion was shattered on a bright, sunny afternoon, a day that started out just like any other. We were having a picnic on the beach, a spread of sandwiches and fruit and a thermos of lemonade, a simple

meal that was a picture of domestic bliss.

Liam was chasing a flock of seagulls, his laughter was a sweet and joyful sound that echoed in the air. Dominic was leaning against a palm tree, a book in his lap, a look of contentment on his face.

I was watching them, my heart overflowing with love, a feeling of pure, unadulterated bliss washing over me. This was it. This was the life I had always dreamed of.

And then Dominic’s phone rang.

The sound was jarring, a harsh, intrusive noise that shattered the peace and quiet of our perfect day. He pulled it out of his pocket, a frown creasing his brow. He looked at the screen, a flicker of something I couldn’t quite place in his eyes.

I have to take this,he said, his tone a little too casual, a clear indication that something was wrong.

He walked away, his voice a low, urgent murmur as he spoke into the phone. I watched him, a sense of unease settling over me, a knot of dread tightening in my stomach.

He was gone for a long time, long enough for the sun to begin its slow descent towards the horizon, long enough for the picnic to be packed away, long enough for Liam to grow tired of chasing seagulls and to curl up on the blanket, his little body exhausted from a day of fun in the sun.

When he came back, the easy smile was gone, replaced by a grim, hard set to his jaw. The carefree, relaxed man I had come to know over the past few weeks had vanished, replaced by the Alpha, the leader,

the protector.

The police have found a body,he said, his voice a low, serious rumble, devoid of any emotion. In a ditch on the outskirts of the city.”

I felt a cold dread wash over me, a sudden, sharp chill that had nothing to do with the ocean breeze. Who?I asked, my voice a little shaky.

He looked at me, a long, searching gaze that seemed to see right through me. The stripper from my bachelor party,he said, his words a gut punch that left me breathless.

The stripper. The one who had warned me, who had told me that I was in danger, that someone was watching me. The one who knew.

The world around me seemed to tilt, the colors and sounds of the beach fading into a dull, monotonous

hum. I felt a wave of dizziness, a sudden, intense nausea that made me want to gag.

Hailey?Dominic was at my side in an instant, his arm around my waist, a steadying force that kept me

from collapsing. Are you okay?

I shook my head, unable to speak, the words caught in my throat. I couldn’t breathe. The walls were

closing in, the air thick and heavy, suffocating.

He led me to a nearby bench, his grip firm and reassuring. Breathe,he commanded, his voice a low,

steady rumble that cut through the fog of my panic. Just breathe, baby.

I took a deep, shuddering breath, the oxygen filling my lungs, a slow, deliberate effort to regain control.

The urge to puke increased, and I quickly rushed to the nearby trashcan. I puked the sandwich I had earlier

until my stomach was empty, and my throat burned.

Dominic was behind me, holding my hair, his other hand rubbing my back in a comforting, circular motion.

It’s okay,he murmured, his voice a low, soothing balm. I’ve got you.”

When I was done, he handed me a bottle of water, and I rinsed my mouth, the cool liquid a welcome relief.

I’m sorry,I said, my voice a hoarse, pathetic whisper.

Don’t be,he said, his expression softening. “This is a lot to take in.

I looked over at Liam, who was still asleep on the blanket, oblivious to the chaos and fear that had

descended upon our perfect little world. I was thankful for that. I was thankful that he was safe, that he was blissfully unaware of the darkness that lurked just beyond the shores of our island paradise.

We need to go back,” Dominic said, his tone a low, urgent murmur. Now.

I didn’t argue. I didn’t protest. I knew he was right. Our honeymoon was over. The bubble of happiness and

tranquility had burst, and the reality of our situation came crashing back in, a harsh, brutal wakeup call.

We packed up our things in silence, and I was still feeling the nauseousness, the dread a heavy, suffocating blanket that I couldn’t shake off.

Liam woke up, and I explained to him that we were going back home. He was a little disappointed, but he didn’t put up a fight, all thanks to his sweet, easygoing nature.

The flight back was a quiet, tense affair. Dominic was on his phone for most of it, his voice a low, urgent

murmur as he spoke with Giovanni, a look of intense concentration on his face. I could feel the energy coming off him in waves, astrong, almost tangible force that was both intimidating and reassuring.

I, on the other hand, was lost in a fog of fear and uncertainty. I couldn’t stop thinking about the stripper, about the warning he had given me. Was that why he died? Because he tried to look out for me and he was killed? I felt responsible for his death, a heavy, crushing feeling that settled on my shoulders, a guilt

that was as real as it was irrational.

Dominic must have sensed my distress, because he reached across the aisle and took my hand, his fingers lacing with mine. It’s not your fault, Hailey,he said, his voice a low, steady rumble that cut through my dark thoughts. None of this is your fault.

I wanted to believe him, I really did. But a part of me couldn’t help but feel like I had brought this upon us,

like I had tempted fate, like I had somehow invited this darkness into our lives.

What are we going to do?I asked, my voice a little shaky.

He squeezed my hand, a silent gesture of support and encouragement. I’m going to find out who’s behind

this,he said, his voice a low, menacing growl. And I am going to make them pay.

There was a cold, hard fury in his eyes, a dangerous glint that promised retribution. He was the Alpha, the protector, the leader, and he would stop at nothing to keep his family safe.
