CHAPTER TWENTY–THREE–1

HAILEY

I haven’t had a meeting with the board directors since my promotion which was a good thing, and they

had informed me about the meetings months prior.

This was definitely an emergency and it made me anxious.

I didn’t know what was going on, but whatever it was, couldn’t be good.

Valerie seemed to be as nervous as me, and the last thing I wanted was for her to be worried.

“Hey, don’t worry. It’ll be fine. We haven’t done anything wrong. So, whatever it is, they’re probably just going to inform us of something and then we can get back to work. Maybe they have some changes for the hospital, or maybe they’re adding some new rules and regulations.”

“Yeah, you’re right. We haven’t done anything wrong.”

“Exactly. Now, let’s go.”

She smiled, and I led the way to the conference room.

When we entered, I could see the board directors were already seated and talking amongst themselves. For some reason, the tension in my shoulders didn’t ease up, and I knew something was definitely up.

“Hi, sorry we’re late. Nurse Sanchez and I came as soon as we heard. Is everything alright?”

“Dr. Anderson, have a seat,” Mr. Johnson, the lead director said, his expression grim.

Valerie and I shared a look and sat down, waiting to hear what he had to say. I didn’t see the familiar smile that they gave me the last time I was invited here, the air wasn’t welcoming and the tension was too high.

Something was definitely up.

And I wasn’t going to like it.

“As you know, we hold board meetings once every three months. However, with the new circumstances, we had to speed things up and change a few things.”

“Okay,” I replied, not liking where this was going.

“As the director of the hospital, we’re always concerned about increasing the chances of medical practitioners around the world. And after a long meeting with the world’s medical association, we agreed that the best way to increase these chances was through collaborations.”

“Collaborations?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes. Which brings me to the real purpose of this meeting. As the head director, and founder of the hospital, it is my duty to ensure the best possible treatment for our patients. Therefore, in order to ensure the quality of healthcare, the board directors and I have come to a decision that is very important and very

difficult for us, but we also have to put the health of other people into consideration.”

“And what is it?” I asked, not liking how he was dragging this.

“Starting today, the board directors and I have decided to select our best medical practitioners and

nurses. From there, we will select a few people who will work at other hospitals around the world, and

bring awareness to the latest techniques, technology, and treatments.”

“Okay, and how does this affect us? What’s the decision that you’re trying to make?”

“Well, I was getting to that. Since we chose our best practitioners, it was only right to include Dr. Anderson,

our best surgeon and your most trusted assistant, Nurse Sanchez. However, we were having a hard time

choosing, since everyone has proven themselves to be extraordinary, and we can’t choose a few. So,

instead of a few, we’ve decided to pick our best.”

“Best? What do you mean, best?”

“The top three. Out of all the doctors, surgeons, and nurses, the top three will be picked and will leave to work at the other hospitals outside the country. We hate to do this, since we don’t want anyone to leave, but we also have to think about the patients all around the world, and not just here. So, after a long debate, we have chosen the best three out of all the staff members. Starting today, you have two weeks to think about this, or you will unfortunately be demoted so the next person on the list can take your position.”

I was shocked.

Out of all the things he could have said, this was the last thing I was expecting.

They wanted me to move. Act like my life here was never real, and live somewhere else, while being the

best doctor.

I couldn’t do that.

I couldn’t just pack up, and leave.

Especially now.

“Sir, this is very sudden. And a huge decision. We haven’t had time to think about this, nor have we had time to prepare. We would need time. Two weeks is not enough. Can’t you give us a couple of months to

think about this?”

“I’m sorry. There are other board meetings and we’ve already chosen the top three. You will have two

weeks to make the final decision, and if not, the next person will be promoted.”

“But, this is-”

“Dr. Anderson, I’m sorry. This is the only thing we can offer.”

“Which country? Do we at least get to know the place that we’re moving to?”

“We’ve been in touch with a few other hospitals and there are a couple that have shown interest in us, and a particular town has really caught our attention. The people there have been struggling with their medical care and their facilities. We’ve talked to their leader, and have decided that the top three will be sent there, and will stay and work in the hospital until the situation is under control. After that, if they’re comfortable, they can either decide to stay, or return back home.”

“Sir, you still haven’t told us which country this is and the town’s name.” I reminded, trying my best to control my anger at their audacious demands.

“We’ve received an invitation from a town in Springfield. It’s in the United States.”

My breath hitched, and Valerie’s hand squeezed mine under the table, her eyes wide.

“United States? Why would they need the help of a few surgeons and nurses? I’m sure there are other medical care units nearby that can help.”

My blood ran cold. It was definitely Dominic’s pack. The Blood Moon Pack.

What were the odds that I would end up there?

Was fate really testing me?

“The town doesn’t have a lot of resources, and their medical facilities are scarce. They need help and are willing to pay. Besides, it’s a chance to travel and explore the world. Who doesn’t want that? So, you have two weeks to think. After that, the top three will be informed and will be leaving.”

“Sirs, with all due respect, I have a son. A son who has lived five years of his life in this place. He has created lots of memories, made lots of friends, you don’t just expect me to throw all that away and go

across the world.”

“Dr. Anderson, it’s a chance for your son to also explore. I’m sure with time, he would adjust and adapt. He’s a little boy, and little boys love adventure. Think about the experience. Plus, we’ve discussed and have decided that the top three will each receive a hefty sum. Not to mention the pay that you will be

receiving every month.”

This was a dead end. It’s either I agreed or risk losing my job. It was either I faced my nemesis, my buried past, my nightmares, or risk being demoted and everything I’ve ever worked for crumbles to the ground.

“We will be leaving you to think. You can start packing and let us know. If not, we’ll be happy to find someone else. But, we really hope you consider this, as your gifted talent could really make a difference in the world. You’ll be helping hundreds of people and saving lives. Just remember, your decisions have an impact on others.”

With that, the board directors left.

I was shocked, and couldn’t speak.

“Hailey, what are you going to do? This is insane! They can’t do this!” Valerie crashed out immediately we were left alone.

“Apparently, they can.” I said, my body still frozen in shock. This was really happening.

A place I’d sworn to never return to, a place filled with too many memories, a place filled with too many lies and secrets, was calling for me.

Dominic.

My heart squeezed at the thought of his name.

The man who betrayed me.

The man who I had loved.

The man who had left me.

How was I supposed to face him after five years, and not break?

And I wasn’t alone this time. I had a secret I kept for five years, a secret that would make and break me.

How would Dominic react when he finds out he has a son.

Our son.

I shook my head.
