CHAPTER EIGHTY-THREE-2
“Hailey, do you really think that things will be okay, and the baby will be safe and healthy?”
“Val, the doctor said you’re in good health, and the baby is fine. She said that the first three months are critical, and that we just have to be cautious. The best thing to do is take things slow and not
stress or worry. This is just your first month. And whether you have to do it alone or not, I’ll be here
with
you, every step of the way.”
She let go and gave me a small smile.
“Thank you.”
“Val, I’m always going to be here, and there’s no reason to thank me. You’re like my sister, and this
is what sisters are for.”
“Yeah, well, I don’t think all sisters go through this type of stuff. I got myself into this mess, I should as well figure it out. And, if things don’t go my way, then maybe it’s a sign that I shouldn’t be with
him.”
“It’s a sign that you’re meant to do it alone. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and the important thing is that the baby has you as his or her mother.”
The next few days passed by in a blur, and I was finally able to convince Valerie to break the news
to Giovanni.
I had called him an hour ago and he was going to be here any minute. Valerie was a nervous wreck and was pacing in her room.
“He’s going to hate me. He’s going to think that I trapped him.”
“Calm down, and stop freaking out. If he feels that way, then it’s his problem, and not yours. If he’s not willing to fight and be a man, then maybe he’s not the one for you. And the fact that you’re willing to put yourself out there and tell him, means that you’re stronger than he thinks. And that you’re not afraid.”
“I’m terrified. The last thing I would ever want is for him to resent me, and our child. If he wants nothing to do with the baby, it would crush me, and hurt like hell. Hailey, I never expected any of this, and now that I’m pregnant, the last thing I want is for him to hate me and not care.”
“You have to stop thinking like that, and calm down. If he doesn’t care or value you, then it’s not worth it, and you have no reason to cry. Okay? Pull yourself together, and don’t show him how vulnerable and weak you feel. Show him that you’re not afraid and that you’re strong enough to do

this on your own even if he doesn’t. You can do this, Val. You’re not alone. I will always be here with
you.”
“Thanks, Hailey. For everything. I don’t know what I would have done without you, and you’re the only person that has always been here, and never left.”
The doorbell rang, and she froze.
“Hailey.”
“I got it. You stay here and breathe.”
I walked downstairs, and opened the door. “Hey. Come in. She’s waiting inside.”
He walked in and followed me.
“What’s going on, Hailey? Is Valerie okay? She’s has been ignoring my texts and calls for weeks, and she hasn’t spoken to me since that night.”
“Yes, she’s fine. She has something important to tell you, and she’s waiting for you.”
He walked into the living room, and went to the kitchen, trying to give them so privacy but also close enough to hear their conversation.
I heard the door open, and their voices.
“What’s happening, baby? Why are you avoiding me, and not talking to me? Are you okay?”
“Yes, Giovanni. I’m fine.”
“Are you sure? Because if I did something, then you tell me instead of ignoring me and shutting me out like that. Do you know-”
“I’m pregnant.” Valerie cut him off, mid sentence.
Silence.
I heard his sharp intake of breath, and waited for him to say something.
Anything.
“W-what?”
“I’m pregnant, Giovanni.”
“H-how? Did you-
“No, I didn’t do anything, and it just happened.”
“How, Val? We were careful. Unless-

“The night when we had sex, and forgot about protection. That’s the night when I must have
gotten pregnant.”
There was silence again and if I could feel the tension from right here, I wonder how
uncomfortable Valerie was.
