After Rejection Divorced Luna Becomes A Famous Doctor (Hailey and Dominic) novel Chapter 9

CHAPTER NINE1

HAILEY

I woke up to small kisses all over my face, Liam’s warm little body wiggling beside me under the covers. A

sleepy smile pulled at my lips as I kept my eyes shut, savoring this part of the morning.

Mommy,Liam whispered against my cheek, drawing out the last syllable like a song. Time to wake up,

wake up, wake up!

I opened one eye to find a pair of sapphire blue ones, the only thing he got from me, staring right back at

me, so full of life and mischief it made my chest tighten with overwhelming love. Five years old and already the boss of the house.

He giggled when I reached up and poked his sides, and he squirmed away, rolling off the bed dramatically

with a soft oof!as he hit the carpeted floor.

I heard him scamper off toward the bathroom, calling over his shoulder, Bubble bath, Mommy! Bubble

bath, pleeeease!

I groaned, stretching my limbs as the memories of last night tugged at the edge of my consciousness, but

I pushed them away.

Today was a new day.

Today was about Liam.

I got out of bed and padded across the apartment barefoot, yawning as I reached the bathroom. Liam had already dragged his tiny stool to the edge of the tub, his favorite lavender bubble bath in hand, grinning like he’d just discovered treasure.

groaned, stretching my limbs as the memories of last night tugged at the edge of my consciousness. The emergency. Giovanni. It all rushed forward like a crashing wave, threatening to drown this quiet moment of peace. But I shoved it back into the dark corners of my mind where it belonged, for now.

Liam was all that mattered this morning.

Alright, alright,I said, taking the bottle from him. Let’s make a deal. You let me brush your hair without a fight after this and I’ll throw in extra bubbles.

He narrowed his eyes suspiciously. No tangles?

I raised three fingers. Wolf’s honor.

He nodded solemnly. Deal.

Okay, little bubble prince,” I said, smiling as I knelt beside the tub and took the bottle from his hands.Let’s get your kingdom ready.”

I turned on the water and began to fill the tub, squeezing the purple liquid under the running faucet. Soon, the room filled with the soft, soapy scent Liam loved, and white clouds of bubbles began rising with the water. He jumped in eagerly, his rubber duck already clutched in one hand.

As I knelt beside the tub and washed his arms gently, my fingers paused for just a moment over the faint, crescent shaped birthmark on his upper left arm. It was small, subtle, but unmistakable, the exact shape and placement as the King family’s sigil. A symbol I had spent years trying to forget.

The King’s tattoo.

My son was an Alpha’s bloodline.

I exhaled slowly and dipped the sponge into the water, resuming my task. I wouldn’t let it define him. Not

now. Not ever.

Liam giggled and splashed at the bubbles, his little voice filling the room. Mommy, guess what? I’m gonna

be a superhero today. I already have powers.

Speed. And strength. Andhe lowered his voice dramatically, laser eyes. But I only use them when

someone is really mean.”

Well, I hope your teacher doesn’t get zapped.

He smirked, proud. She won’t. She gives me cookies.

I laughed as I washed the suds from his hair, careful not to get any in his eyes. Once he was clean and toweled off, I carried him to his room and helped him into his school uniform, a navy shirt, khaki pants, and light up sneakers that made him bounce with excitement every time they blinked.

CHAPTER NINE2

Do I look handsome, Mommy?

You look like the most powerful superhero in the whole world,” I said as I brushed his damp curls, keeping

my promise not to tug.

He grinned, teeth still slightly crooked from babyhood. And you look like the best mommy ever.

Tears threatened to sting my eyes. Every day, he reminded me of how far we’d come.

Once he was ready, I quickly got dressed, a simple blouse, black slacks, white coat already in my hand,

and then packed his lunch, grabbed both our bags, and we headed down to the car.

It was my car. Mine.

A dark blue SUV I’d bought three months ago. New. Paid off in full. I’d cried the day I drove it off the lot. Not because of the car, but because it meant independence. Stability. The life I’d once only dreamed of.

Now I had it.

As I buckled Liam into his car seat, he asked, Can we get ice cream after school? From the place with the

sprinkles and the blue chairs?

I tapped his nose. Only if you’re good today.

He gave a thumbs up. I’ll be the bestest. Pinky promise.”

He hooked his tiny pinky with mine and we sealed the deal.

The drive to his school was smooth. Quiet. He hummed songs from cartoons in the back seat, and I found myself smiling more than once just listening to him.

When we arrived, I walked him to the gate and crouched beside him. Remember, no laser eyes. Only hugs, okay?I definitely didn’t want the whole school knowing about his werewolf genes.

He giggled. Okay, okay!

His teacher met us at the entrance and Liam darted toward her, turning back only once to wave

enthusiastically. Love you, Mommy!

I love you more,I whispered.

And then he disappeared into the classroom.

I stood there for a bit longer, holding onto the warmth that only he could give mebefore walking back to

my car and letting reality slide back into place.

It was Tuesday.

The hospital awaited.

And Giovanni

I exhaled, my fingers tightening on the steering wheel as I pulled out of the school lot.

Please let him be gone, I prayed silently. Let him wake up, leave, and disappear just like he came.

Claim

I didn’t want to explain. Didn’t want to reopen wounds that had scabbed over slowly. Didn’t want the chaos of that world to bleed into the one I’d fought so hard to create here. I didn’t go through all that trouble to back in the very place I bled to escape from.

I didn’t survive abandonment, betrayal, and the cold rejection of a mate bond only to circle back to the shadows I’d already outrun. I had fought, fought hard for this quiet life, for Liam’s safety, for the right to

breathe without flinching.

But fate had never cared for what I wanted.

By the time I reached the hospital, my breath was steady, my face neutral. I parked in my reserved spot and took the elevator to my floor, my white coat draped over one arm, bag slung over the other.

The elevator dinged and I stepped out, already planning my rounds and crashed straight into a solid chest.

My bag dropped to the floor with a thud.

Sorry, I-I began, kneeling to grab my things.

Then I froze.
