Alpha Nicholas novel Chapter 40

As I run with all I have to reach the cells where we keep all our prisoners I send Will a link to get several guards down there. I need to contain this as quickly as possible but it could all go very wrong very quickly and I want to make sure I have a few men there to keep Tony in line. He may be one wolf but he’s also one of the strongest men I know and when he’s pissed he’s a fucking demon.

“It’s my brother down there, a brother who tried to kill me and a woman that I had never met before who wanted to help him. I deserve to know why. He told me why in the forest but still, I need to know if it’s true or not. Please… I… I’ve never… it doesn’t matter.” I swear if it’s the last thing I do I will get that stutter out of her. I don’t have a problem with her having a stutter obviously but her having one because she’s scared to talk… no that won’t be happening anymore. She will never fear talking about anything with anyone. She will always say what she wants when she wants and anyone who has a problem with her will find me standing behind her and they won’t like the outcome.

“You’ve never what, sweetheart? Talk to me.” As I turned to face her Ryan linked me to tell me that he had the situation under control. Will just so happened to be right outside the cell block with several guards on the way to do some extra training when I linked him resulting in it taking them just seconds to reach the cells and just a few minutes to get Tony under control. “We need to get down there, it’s ok. It can wait.”

“They have control of Tony. I had guards sent there while we were on the way. Tony is my best friend but you, sweetheart, you will always come before him and he knows it without me even saying anything. “You’ve never what, sweetheart?” She seems to study me for a moment and then lets out a deep breath. “I’ve never been able to stand up to my brother. I couldn’t but with him locked up… with you there… I feel… I feel like I can do it. I feel safe and… and protected.”

Her words make me want to run outside and bang my fists against my chest while I howl like the Alpha I am. To me, it’s automatic that she should feel safe and protected around me but given her upbringing, I wasn’t expecting to hear that from her, not anytime soon anyway. “You are always safe and protected with me, baby. And when I’m not around you are safe and protected with any one of my pack members. You may not know it yet, or even believe it yet but I will make sure that you do no matter how long it takes.”

She gives me the biggest smile that I have seen since we met and it makes my heart feel full, warm even. Fuck it, I throw caution to the wind and kiss her right there in the hallway that leads to the cells, the hallway that is currently swarming with guards that are on standby in case they are needed down in the cells. I hope I haven’t gone too far or made her feel uncomfortable but I just couldn’t resist. Thankfully, the minute I pull back she once again smiles and I swear I’m already falling deep and hard for this girl. Fuck, this mate bond is so much more intense than I ever imagined it could be.

We walk past around 10 cells and I’m grateful to see them all empty except for one. In the far corner on my left, I can see someone sitting on some kind of makeshift bed. He’s got his knees bent and his head buried in his lap so I can’t see his face but I get the strangest feeling. I turn to look up at Nick but he just shakes his head no which is fine for now but I will be asking about whoever that is.

All too soon any thoughts of that man fly out of my head as I hear shouting coming from further down the hallway. “Do you have any idea who I am!” My brother’s grating voice bounces off the walls and instantly makes my skin crawl. “Don’t speak unless you are spoken to. You won’t like what happens otherwise!” A different voice bounces off the walls this time and it doesn’t sound like someone who you would want to piss off. Just a few seconds later we arrive at the end of the hallway and take a left which leads us into a room well, I think it’s more of an interrogation room but I don’t have much time to look around as my brother’s dark brown eyes zoon in on me and send a sick shiver through my whole body.

And then the entire room goes into darkness and a cackle is all that can be heard. Fuck!
