Chapter 115

Kira’s POV:

I crouched low beneath the thick canopy of leaves, my body coiled with tension as I observed Noah making his way toward Rocco, cradling the baby carefully in his arms. Andy knelt quietly beside me, his hand resting gently on my shoulder—a silent signal to stay perfectly still. We were hidden on a ridge overlooking the clearing below, positioned just far enough away to remain unseen but close enough for me to catch every detail.

“He’s risking everything,” I whispered, my fingers digging into the moist earth beneath me. My heart pounded fiercely against my ribs as Noah paused directly in front of Rocco. Even from this distance, I could make out the blood smeared across Noah’s forehead, and I bit my lip hard to stop myself from shouting a warning.

Rocco stood stiffly, his face unreadable as his eyes shifted between Noah and the infant in his arms. Several wolves flanked him, their expressions sharp and guarded, ready for any sign of trouble.

“They’re buying his story,” Andy murmured beside me, nodding toward Rocco’s body language. “Look how tense they are, but not attacking.”

I held my breath, watching as Rocco’s gaze softened just a fraction while he inspected the baby. A wave of relief washed over me, making my limbs feel suddenly weak. They weren’t going to harm Noah—not right away, at least.

“We need to move,” Andy said quietly, tugging gently at my arm just as Rocco’s group began to escort Noah and the child away from the clearing. “Now, while their attention is fully on him.”

I nodded reluctantly, turning away from the scene. My legs felt heavy and unsteady as I followed Andy through the dense forest, trying to tread as quietly as possible. Every snapping twig beneath my feet made me flinch.

For nearly an hour, we pressed eastward, putting as much distance as we could between ourselves and Rocco’s search party. The forest thickened and darkened around us, the uneven ground making it harder for my human eyes to navigate.

“They believed Noah,” I finally broke the silence, my voice sounding strange in the quiet woods. “He’ll be safe, right?”

Andy gave a reassuring nod. “Noah’s clever. Bringing the baby was a smart move—Rocco won’t harm him as long as he’s protecting an innocent child.”

I trudged onward, my mind replaying the events of the past day over and over. The image of Dr. Green’s eyes as I plunged the silver blade into his chest haunted me relentlessly. I had taken a life—something irreversible. My stomach churned at the memory.

“I couldn’t have done it without you,” I confessed, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. “If you hadn’t fought him first… I was just too weak.”

Andy glanced at me, his expression grave. “Don’t downplay what you did. Facing a transformed werewolf without any powers—and winning—that takes more than just strength.”

I looked down at my hands—ordinary human hands that once morphed into deadly claws. “But it’s not enough, is it? Dr. Green was just one piece of the puzzle. The Triads are much bigger than him.”

“Yes,” Andy agreed, stepping carefully over a fallen log. “We’ve been tracking them for years. They’ve infiltrated wolf packs across the country.”

We walked on in silence for a while, the cool night air brushing against my skin. I pulled my jacket tighter around my shoulders, the weight of everything settling heavily on me.
