The white wolf was the first to strike, lunging directly at Andy as if it judged him the bigger threat. Their bodies collided in a blur of swift motion, too rapid for me to track every detail. But amidst the chaos, I spotted my chance. Moving quickly and silently, I slipped in from behind, aiming my silver blade at the wolf’s exposed flank.
The wolf sensed my approach, twisting its body with an almost supernatural speed to face me. Yet Andy had already seized its hind leg, throwing the creature off balance. My knife found its mark, slicing a shallow but painful cut across the wolf’s shoulder.
Rather than a cry of pain, the wolf let out a furious howl, its rage palpable. It spun around with a powerful kick, flinging Andy off and then turning its blazing fury toward me.
Suddenly, a noise at the cave’s entrance caught our attention. Rebecca and Jennifer had arrived, along with the rest of our team, swiftly dispatching the remaining robed figures with practiced efficiency. A surge of hope filled me—we might actually have a chance to turn the tide.
“Form a perimeter!” Rebecca commanded, her voice ringing sharply against the cavern walls. “Jennifer, take the east flank!”
The team responded instantly, moving with the precision of soldiers who had trained together for years. They spread out, encircling the white wolf. Each member took their position, weapons raised and ready, forming a coordinated front that was the result of countless drills and preparation.
The white wolf scanned the new threat, its hackles rising in alarm. For the first time, I caught a flicker of uncertainty in its posture. It retreated toward the stone pool, searching for room to maneuver.
Jennifer lifted her specialized weapon—a launcher designed to fire silver-infused nets capable of immobilizing werewolves. Rebecca mirrored her on the opposite side, holding an identical device.
The wolf seemed to sense the danger. With a sudden burst of energy, it spun rapidly, generating a shockwave that sent several of our team sprawling. Tables overturned, ritual items scattered wildly across the stone floor.
Then, without hesitation, it charged directly at me. Its speed was blinding, leaving me barely enough time to raise my knife. Its eyes burned with a fierce, personal hatred that made no sense. Why was it so focused on me? What had I done to deserve this?
“Now!” Rebecca shouted.
Silver nets launched from both sides, arcing through the air toward the charging beast. At the same moment, Andy lunged from behind, clamping his jaws around the wolf’s hind leg. The timing was flawless—the wolf stumbled just enough for me to sidestep its attack and drive my silver blade deep into its shoulder.
The wolf’s momentum carried it forward, but the blade was buried to the hilt. The silver seared against its flesh, preventing the immediate healing that werewolves usually enjoyed. The wound hissed and smoked, a clear sign of the silver’s power.
This time, the wolf howled in genuine pain, a raw, echoing sound that bounced off the cavern walls. The silver nets tightened around its thrashing body, further restricting its movements. Andy held on firmly to its leg while I twisted the knife before pulling it free, ready to strike again if needed.
Taking advantage of the wolf’s temporary immobilization, I plunged the blade into its flank. The creature’s struggles weakened noticeably; its movements became slower, more erratic.
Then, something unexpected happened. The white fur began to recede, the transformation reversing. Whether this was due to the silver or sheer exhaustion, I couldn’t tell. Its limbs shortened and reshaped, the wolf form gradually melting away to reveal a human figure beneath.
The mask it wore—somehow still clinging through the transformation—started to crack. Thin fractures spread outward from the center, breaking apart the smooth, red surface.
We held our positions, weapons trained on the figure now lying on the stone floor. The robes, though torn and disheveled, remained on the body. Heavy breathing filled the sudden silence of the cavern.
