Chapter 219
“This way!” Rocco shouted over the cacophony of groaning metal and crumbling concrete.
I followed him around a corner, only to stumble as my ankle finally gave out. I hit the ground hard, pain exploding through my leg.
“Shit!” 1 hissed through clenched teeth.
Rocco was back at my side instantly. “How bad?”
“Bad enough, I admitted, struggling to stand. “But I can-”
He didn’t let me finish, simply scooping me up in his arms despite my protests.
“Put me down! I can walk!”
(79)
“Not fast enough,” he countered, already moving forward at a pace I couldn’t have matched.
Being held against his chest brought back unwanted memories. I could feel his heartbeat, steady and strong despite our circumstances. His familiar scent surrounded me, triggering a cascade of conflicting emotions I didn’t have time to process.
Instead, my mind flashed back to that day three years ago. The horrifying kidnapping. The horror of seeing Kim across from me, swollen with pregnancy.
her belly
“He never loved you,” Kim had taunted me then. “He was only using you to get to your father. I’m carrying his children. We’re going to be a family.”
I’d escaped somehow, made it to the cliff edge, and jumped rather than face returning to Rocco after such betrayal. The icy water below had claimed me, or so everyone thought.
What had happened to Kim after that? Where were the twins she’d been carrying?
We reached a partially collapsed corridor, forcing Rocco to slow down. The exit was visible now, a rectangle of daylight at the end of the rubble–strewn hallway.
“We’re almost there,” Rocco said, shifting me slightly in his arms to navigate through a narrow gap.

The force of the implosion sent us sprawling onto the grass several yards away. For a moment, we just lay there, gasping for breath, covered in dust and small cuts, but alive.
Eventually, I pushed myself up to sitting position, my body aching from exertion and injury. Rocco did the same beside me, wincing slightly as he moved his injured shoulder.
“Your shoulder-” I started.
“It’ll heal,” he repeated, cutting me off. A reminder of what he was. What I no longer was.
We sat in silence for a moment, both processing what had just happened. The building that had nearly become our tomb was now nothing more than a pile of rubble.
I turned to face Rocco, my mind still filled with questions about Kim and the children she’d been carrying. His children.
“Rocco,” I said finally, my voice steadier than I expected. “After I jumped from that cliff three years ago… what happened to Kim and the twins she was carrying?”
I watched his face carefully, waiting for an answer that I wasn’t sure I was ready to hear.
