The question hung between us like a physical thing: what happened to Kim and the twins she was carrying after I jumped from that cliff?
My clothes were torn and filthy, covered in gray powder from the building’s collapse. I could taste the dust in my mouth, feel it coating my throat. But none of that mattered now. All that mattered was the truth.
Rocco’s expression transformed before my eyes–hardening, then crumbling in a way I’d rarely seen. The muscle in his jaw tightened as he looked away, focusing on the ruins behind us rather than meeting my gaze. I noticed his shoulder wound slowly closing beneath his torn shirt–a reminder of what he still was and what I no longer was.
“We should get somewhere safe first,” he finally said, gesturing at the destruction around us. “This area isn’t stable.”
I planted my feet firmly on the ground, ignoring the throbbing pain in my ankle. “I’m not moving until you tell me what happened.”
“Kira-
“No.” I cut him off. “No more delays, no more secrets. Tell me.”
His eyes finally met mine, and I saw something break behind them. After a long moment, he sighed deeply and nodded toward a concrete barrier several yards away that had survived the collapse.
“Let’s at least sit down.”
I followed him, limping slightly, and we settled on opposite sides of the barrier. Rocco’s posture was rigid, his hands clasped so tightly together that his knuckles had turned white. He looked like a man being led to execution.
“When I thought you were dead,” he began, then stopped.
“I only want to know what happened to Kim and those babies,” I interrupted. “Don’t circle around it.”
He took a deep breath. “I failed her.”
I kept my expression neutral, waiting.
‘I never marked her, as I’d promised. Never went through with the mating ceremony.”
Despite everything, I felt a strange twist in my chest. I’d known about their relationship—it had been the reason I’d jumped from that cliff. But hearing him confirm it so directly still hurt in ways I hadn’t expected.
“Why?” I asked, needing to understand.
Rocco looked down at his hands. “Marking requires complete emotional commitment. I… couldn’t give that.”
“Because you still thought I might be alive?” I asked sharply.
He shook his head slowly. “Because even if you were dead, I couldn’t let you go.”

I swallowed hard, pushing away the confusing emotions his statement stirred. This wasn’t about me or us. This was about Kim and those
innocent babies.
“What happened to the pregnancy?” I pressed.
Rocco’s expression grew even more pained. “Without my mark, without my constant presence… complications started developing. The doctors warned us the pregnancy was becoming high–risk.”
“After that, Kim just… broke,” Rocco continued. “She wouldn’t see anyone, not even me. She locked herself in her room for weeks. Then one day she was just… gone, No one knew where. She disappeared for months.”
I stood up abruptly, needing to move, to process. My back to Rocco, I stared out at the destruction around us, a fitting backdrop to the story I’d just heard.
“You should have protected her,” I said finally, turning to face him. “You should have protected those babies. No matter what you felt for
me.”

Chapter 220
Rocco didn’t defend himself. He just nodded once, accepting the condemnation. “I know. I failed everyone.”
We stood there in silence, the weight of the past heavy between us. I wrapped my arms around myself, suddenly cold despite the warm air. The thought of Kim–vibrant, arrogant Kim–broken by grief, alone with her pain, made something inside me ache.
And somewhere behind Kim’s eyes, she was still trapped, watching everything that Lyra did with her body, unable to escape.
I turned away, needing space to think, to breathe, to process this new pain that wasn’t even mine to claim.
Yet somehow, it felt like it was.
