Chapter 258
Kira’s POV
The SUV jostled over a pothole, making the metal container in my lap shift slightly. I steadied it with both hands. Inside this experimental device lay our only hope of saving Kim’s mind from being overwritten by Lyra’s consciousness.
“Data analysis complete, Rebecca’s voice came through the car’s communication system. “The consciousness vessel prototype appears functional, but we’ll need significant modifications to handle Lyra’s specific neural patterns.”
I scrolled through the data on my tablet, studying the schematics we’d extracted from Ethan’s facility. “How long until we reach the lab?”
“Twenty minutes, Andy replied from the driver’s seat, his eyes briefly meeting mine in the rearview mirror. “Rebecca’s team is already preparing based on the data we transmitted.”
I nodded, returning my focus to the screen. The technical challenge ahead was immense, but focusing on it was easier than thinking about the emotional minefield waiting at our destination. My mother would be there, hovering over Kim like she’d never left either of us. The thought made my stomach tighten.
“You okay?” Andy asked quietly.
“Fine,” I answered automatically. “Just reviewing the separation protocols.”
When we arrived at Rebecca’s facility, a team of technicians immediately whisked away the container and data drives. I followed them through the sterile corridors, my body running on pure adrenaline despite the exhaustion weighing on my limbs.
The main laboratory had been transformed into a medical suite. In the center, on a hospital bed surrounded by monitoring equipment, lay Kim. My mirror image, yet a stranger. Her face contorted occasionally, even in her sedated state–evidence of the war raging between two consciousnesses in one brain.
My mother sat beside her, clutching her hand. She looked up as I entered, her eyes both hopeful and wary. I gave her a brief nod before turning to Rebecca.
“Status?” I asked, slipping into professional mode.
Rebecca gestured to the brain scan displayed on the wall monitor. “Critical. The competing consciousness patterns are causing neural damage. See these red areas? That’s inflammation from the conflict.”
I studied the scan, noting the concerning patterns. “How long before permanent damage?”
