Chapter 65

Kira’s POV

I stood frozen in the shadows of my dimly lit apartment, my heart pounding wildly against my ribs. Suddenly, a firm hand clamped over my mouth, silencing any sound before I could even scream. My body, weakened and trembling, betrayed me—my limbs refused to respond as I struggled fruitlessly against the unyielding grip encircling my waist.

Who could it be? Was it Kim? My mind spun through terrifying possibilities, each one darker than the last. Could my twin sister have tracked me down here, intent on finishing whatever twisted game she had started earlier? The image of her smug, victorious face flashed before me—how she had gloated when Rocco ordered me out of the mansion. Now, maybe she had come to torment me even more.

A soft, familiar chuckle whispered close to my ear, low and amused, as if my fear was a source of entertainment. “Relax, Kira. If I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn’t have made my presence known.”

The overhead lamp flicked on, bathing the room in a harsh glow and revealing a pale face I instantly recognized. Noah—the hospital administrator who had aided me in uncovering the tampering of my medical records—stood before me, his expression a strange mix of apology and amusement.

“Noah?” I gasped as he released me. “You really scared me!”

“Sorry about that,” he said, though his tone lacked genuine remorse. “I couldn’t exactly knock on your door. You know how it is—walls have ears in wolf territory.”

I pressed a trembling hand to my chest, feeling my frantic heartbeat begin to slow. “How did you even get in? The windows were locked tight.”

Noah gave a cryptic smile. “I have my ways.” He moved to settle casually on my couch, as if this were a routine social visit. “More importantly, I’ve got news about your medical records.”

Still wary from the intrusion, I lowered myself into a chair opposite him. “What did you discover?”

“Ryan has vanished,” Noah said, his face turning serious. “The man who doctored your medical files. I tracked him down to an apartment on the edge of pack territory, but he cleared out about a week ago—left in a hurry, judging by the mess he left behind.”

“Ryan?” I frowned, the name not immediately clicking.

“The young werewolf who altered your test results,” Noah explained. “He worked in the lab at the medical center—or worked, I should say. He’s been missing his shifts, and his supervisor can’t get hold of him.”

Pieces began to fall into place in my mind. “So someone paid him to falsify my results? To make it look like I wasn’t really sick?”

Noah nodded. “That’s my theory. But here’s the kicker—I managed to get into his apartment before the cleaning crew arrived. Found receipts for several large cash deposits, all made within days of your tests.”

Leaning forward, my mind racing, I asked, “Did you find out who made those payments?”

“Not yet,” Noah admitted. “But I’m working on it.”

I bit my lip, trying to process what this meant. Someone was trying to discredit my illness—to make it seem as if I’d fabricated the Bondbreak Syndrome. But why? What could possibly be gained from that?

“Noah,” I said slowly, locking eyes with him, “there’s something else I need to tell you. My father… I don’t believe he’s the one who hurt Lyra Blackwood. I think he’s being set up.”

Noah’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “That’s a serious claim, Kira. The Blackwoods are the most powerful family in the pack.”

“I know,” I whispered. “But Rocco has been using my father’s supposed guilt to justify everything he’s done to me and my family. What if it’s all a lie?”
