Florence had just composed herself and was about to leave the restroom when she stopped abruptly at the corner of the hallway.
A surge of alpha dominance mixed with a softer, delicate werewolf pheromone slammed into her senses like a wave of ice water.
Not far ahead, Baldwin had Ursa pinned against the wall, kissing her with such intensity it was almost violent.
His fingers tangled in her hair while the other hand gripped her waist, pulling her so close it was as if he wanted to fuse her into his very bones. Ursa tilted her head back, her neck forming a graceful arc under the dim corridor lights.
It was impossible to tell how long they stayed locked like that before Baldwin finally pulled away. His thumb brushed across her swollen lips, voice deep and intimate. "Happy now?"
Leaning into his chest, Ursa purred sweetly, "Alpha ... am I being too selfish? I already have your family heirloom, and now I'm asking for a kiss. If Florence saw this, she'd probably be heartbroken again.
"I was just hurting so much. If fate hadn't messed things up back then, we would've been together."
Baldwin's gaze was cold and unreadable. He pulled her even closer and murmured, "Her pain has nothing to do with me.
"I never loved her, and I never will. The mate bond? It was a mistake from the start. The one I've always wanted ... is you, Ursa. You're the only one I ever saw as my true Luna."
And with that, he kissed her again. So raw. So intimate. So real—it was enough to shatter any heart bound to him by fate.
Florence stood frozen, as if someone had clamped their fingers around her heart and squeezed.
Her wolf curled into a ball inside her, whimpering in pain.
She pressed her hand against her heart, thinking, maybe this is just the last warmth left from loving him.
It was her wolf's final longing for a fated mate.
Once that warmth faded, there would be nothing left.
Baldwin and Ursa finally broke apart after five minutes and walked away.
Only after their figures had vanished down the hallway did Florence step out of the shadows.
She inhaled deeply, straightened her gown, and headed back into the ballroom to grab her bag and leave. The air still carried traces of their pheromones, sharp enough to sting her nose.
But as she entered the ballroom, Ursa stormed over and grabbed her wrist. "Florence, if you liked the ring Alpha gave me, you could've just said so," Ursa said, her tone sugar-laced and trembling. "You didn't have to steal it."
Florence was stunned by the accusation. "What are you talking about? I didn't steal anything."
"Still pretending, huh?" Ursa's eyes glistened with tears. "I just went to the bathroom, and when I came back, the ring was gone! The waitstaff said you were the only one near my bag!"
