Chapter 14 Red Turning Black

Level three means red mixed with black, red with darkness bleeding through.

By level four, a zombie’s eyes return to pure white, with no pupils,

At level five, they start shifting to light purple.

Level six turns deep purple.

Level seven becomes black.

The fourth stage is the dividing line.

That’s when they’re officially called advanced zombies.

In ten years of the apocalypse, the highest–level zombie Cecilia had ever seen was level seven, killed by Brandon.

But there were rumors of level eight and level nine zombies.

Those were said to be fully humanlike, nearly impossible to tell apart.

In the end, they were killed by Brandon’s greatest enemy, the Dark Lord.

Their heads were supposedly sent to the base as gifts.

But that was only hearsay.

She’d never seen the heads of those level eight or nine zombies herself.

Her thoughts snapped back to the present.

A level two zombie wouldn’t necessarily wipe them all out.

But it would still be hard to deal with.

Because zombie levels didn’t match human ability levels one–to–one.

A level two zombie needed at least four level two ability users to handle it.

Cecilia glanced at Timothy, a level two ice user.

Then at Hendrick, level two wind.

Add Ryan, a level one fire user.

Maybe they could barely manage.

It could clearly see the living people in front of it.

Its crimson eyes widened with excitement.

It opened its mouth and roared like a wild beast.

The next second, it leapt off the truck bed and lunged straight at Timothy.

Timothy had military training and solid physical conditioning.

He dodged the pounce in one clean move.

But that only made the level two zombie even more excited.

Its bulging muscles looked ready to burst through its suit.

Wait.

Cecilia’s eyes narrowed as she glanced lower.

The crotch was torn.

And damn it, it was wearing patterned underwear.

The sudden visual almost burned her eyes.

Timothy had already formed ice blades and rushed in to fight the level two zombie head–on.

Hendrick and Ryan charged in.

One from the front, one from behind, attacking its back.

But the level two zombie’s hide was thick.

Or rather, it didn’t feel pain at all.

Hendrick stabbed straight for its forehead.

The zombie caught the movement out of the corner of its crimson eye and dodged.

The blade nearly went straight into Timothy’s head.

A bead of cold sweat slid down Timothy’s temple.

“Hendrick!‘ Timothy shouted, then kicked the level two zombie away.

Bang

The zombie flew back and crashed into the checkout counter.

Timothy wiped his sweat and yelled to Matthew in the distance, “Get Ivy and the others back in the car!”

Matthew nodded rapidly and ran inside.

Ryan spotted Cecilia standing not far away and snapped, “Do you want to die? Why aren’t you running?”

Cecilia realized that right now, none of them had a clear understanding of zombie levels yet.

This level two zombie was obviously no ordinary threat.

Watching the three of them lock onto it with grim focus.

She couldn’t help thinking maybe in her last life, this was exactly how it had been.

They hadn’t known how strong the zombie really was.

They’d only thought about keeping as many teammates alive as possible.

The more she thought about it, the heavier her chest felt.

Watching Timothy and the others get tangled up with the zombie again made her head ache.

Ivy answered and grabbed Cecilia’s hand, pulling her outside.

She knew that at this level, staying here would only get in the way.

Matthew escorted the three of them back to the SUV, then ran to the trunk, grabbed a gun, and rushed back into the supermarket.
