Chapter 31 Hendrick’s Breakthrough

It was past four in the morning.

Dawn would arrive soon. They couldn’t just leave them outside the door.

After thinking for a moment, Timothy turned to Ryan. “Help me carry Hendrick into the villa.”

Ryan blinked in surprise. “Carry him inside?”

“Yeah.”

Timothy stepped behind Hendrick and reached out, about to lift him up by the shoulders.

Suddenly, Hendrick’s eyes snapped open.

In the next instant, he twisted around and launched a strike at Timothy with startling speed.

Timothy reacted on instinct and raised his arm to block.

Even so, Hendrick moved so quickly that the impact still numbed Timothy’s arm.

“Hendrick?”

Timothy staggered back a few steps, staring at him in shock.

Hendrick was breathing hard. His face was flushed. In the dim night, his eyes seemed to glow faintly green, filled with barely restrained excitement.

He spoke the words slowly, “I leveled up.”

Timothy’s eyes flickered. The worry in his chest finally faded. A smile spread across his face. “Congratulations, Hendrick.”

“Hendrick?”

Ryan looked utterly stunned. He stared at Hendrick and blurted out, “Wait … were you just testing your strength on Timothy? Holy shit, you scared me. I thought that zombie crystal turned you into a zombie!”

“Stop talking nonsense.”

Hendrick flicked Ryan on the forehead. “You’ll understand when you level up.”

Ryan rubbed his aching forehead and fell silent.

They have all awakened their abilities around the same time–at most a day or two apart.

Hendrick has already reached level 3, but I still stuck at level 1.

The thought made him feel both frustrated and a little bitter.

Timothy studied Hendrick carefully.

“I could feel the difference just now,” he said. “Your ability feels much stronger than when you were level 2.”

Hendrick nodded. Without another word, he lifted his hand and released a wind blade.

The blade itself was invisible in the darkness, but when it tore through the air, a powerful gust whipped Timothy’s hair backward.

Whoosh!

Everyone heard the sharp sound of slicing wind.

A moment later–Crack!

Boom!

About 30 feet away, a tree as thick as a man’s wrist suddenly snapped and crashed to the ground.

Timothy and the others stared in shock.

This was the power of a level 3 wind ability?

It was terrifyingly strong.

If that tree had been a zombie’s head, the wind blade would have cut it off in an instant.

Ryan’s eyes lit up as he looked at Hendrick with pure admiration. “Hendrick, that was incredible! You cut a tree down from that far away!”

Hendrick gave a small smile. “After reaching level 3, the ability channels in my body expanded to twice what they were at level 2. My speed increased, and I can now form wind blades. At that distance and strength, I can use it about three times.”

Abilities weren’t unlimited, after all.

Every attack consumed energy, so you had to control how you used it.

Timothy looked surprised. “A single level 2 crystal contains that much energy?”

Hendrick shrugged. “Oh! I was probably close to breaking through already. Now the crystal is completely drained.”

He opened his hand and showed it.

Timothy took the crystal and examined it closely. The stone that had once been red was now completely clear, like ordinary glass.

Every trace of energy had been used up.

Timothy turned to Cecelia. “Can this still be used?”

Cecelia yawned and squinted at the crystal. “No idea. Maybe keep it as a trophy. level 2 zombies are pretty hard to kill right now.”

Timothy’s gaze darkened slightly. He understood the hidden meaning behind her words.

Don’t throw the crystal away. It might still have another use.

He nodded, then turned to the others. “Everyone go back to the villa and rest.”

Matthew asked, “Timothy, are we still heading to Sylcreek today?”

“Yes,” Timothy replied firmly. “We’ll stick to the plan. We’ll just delay departure by three hours.”

He tightened his grip on the now–empty zombie crystal.

Cecelia’s guess had been correct.
