Chapter 37 Trouble in the Alley
The noise they made had already attracted the zombies upstairs.
Cecelia quickly grabbed Ivy and pulled her into the room.
Finished
Hendrick had already dug out the crystals from both the level 1 and level 2 zombies. He glanced at Cecelia, his eyes carrying a strange, thoughtful look.
Cecelia paused for a second, then casually shook the bottle of water in her hand. “Want some?”
Hendrick shook his head. “No. Let’s go downstairs.”
“Alright.”
Cecelia wiped the sweat off her forehead and stepped aside to clear the doorway. “You go first. I’m worn out.”
The room was tiny, and trying to drag zombies around inside it had taken far more effort than she liked.
If Hendrick hadn’t been there, she would have finished the level 2 zombie herself–quick, clean, and straight to the crystal.
But every crystal had to be turned in after the fight anyway.
That made the whole thing feel pointless. Might as well let Hendrick handle the work.
Hendrick stepped out first.
The regular zombies coming down from upstairs didn’t last long. He took them down in seconds.
Ivy followed close behind, still holding Cecelia’s hand as the three of them moved down the stairs.
“Watch out!” Ivy suddenly shouted.
A level 1 zombie burst into view at the doorway and lunged straight at Hendrick.
It moved fast–far faster than the regular ones.
Its claws slashed wildly through the air as it rushed forward.
Cecelia even caught a glimpse of shredded meat stuck between its teeth.
Hendrick reacted quickly and dodged the strike without getting hit.
But the zombie instantly changed targets and rushed straight at Ivy.
The moment Ivy met those pale red eyes, her body froze. Fear locked her in place.
She stood directly in the zombie’s path, too shocked to move.
Hendrick stood behind her. He couldn’t risk using his wind blade. If he did, the attack might slice through

Ivy’s head along with the zombie.
“Hiss!”
Stab!
Finished.
Cecelia yanked Ivy backward. At the same time, her dagger shot forward and drove straight into the zombie’s temple.
The zombie stiffened instantly.
Before it could even touch Ivy, its body went completely still.
The sudden turn of events left Ivy stunned.
Hendrick, standing near the door, was just as surprised.
He narrowed his eyes and studied Cecelia carefully.
Cecelia pulled the dagger out and flicked her wrist, shaking off the stiffness. “Dang! My hand’s numb.”
Hendrick didn’t say anything.
But one thought crossed his mind. How long was this girl planning to keep pretending?
“Cece, is your hand okay?” Ivy asked quickly, worry filling her voice.
Cecelia sucked in a small breath. “I just used too much force. It’s a little numb, that’s all. I’m fine.”
“That’s good.”
Ivy let out a relieved sigh, though guilt quickly appeared on her face. “This is my fault. I was so scared just now that I forgot to move.”
Hendrick stepped forward, flipped the zombie over, and quickly dug out the crystal. “Don’t overthink it,” he said. “Let’s head back.”
“Okay!”
Ivy nodded and hurried after him, pulling Cecelia along.
The three of them stepped outside.
More zombies were wandering through the streets now.
Buzz!
The radio clipped to Hendrick’s belt suddenly crackled with static.
Without hesitation, he broke into a run toward their meeting point.
He moved extremely fast.

Chapter 37 Trouble in the Alley
Too fast for Ivy to keep up.
Cecelia slowed her pace instead.
She wasn’t in any rush.
Her gaze drifted toward a nearby level 1 zombie.
Almost at the same moment, the zombie turned its head.
Their eyes met.
Finished
The creature’s expression instantly changed, its gaze lighting up with the excitement of spotting prey.
Cecelia glanced at Ivy. “Ivy, keep running. I’ll deal with this one and catch up.”
Before Ivy could respond, Cecelia released her hand and sprinted toward the zombie.
Ivy froze for a moment.
She looked at Hendrick disappearing ahead, then at Cecelia charging toward the zombie.
In the end, she chose to run after Hendrick.
There were fewer zombies that way.
Even though she held a dagger, she had never killed a zombie completely on her own before.
The few she had faced in the past were always with Timothy and Hendrick nearby, helping her build up
courage.
Two minutes later, Cecelia kicked the zombie’s head aside.
She rinsed the crystal with the last bit of water from her bottle and slipped it into her pocket.
Then she jumped down from the car she had climbed onto earlier, sidestepped a regular zombie lunging at her, and ran toward Ivy.
Ivy was breathing hard.
She had just stopped for a moment to catch her breath.
Suddenly, a zombie lunged straight at her.
She reacted on instinct, dodging to the side before turning and running again.
Regular zombies weren’t very fast. She quickly left it behind.
But the next second, a hand suddenly grabbed her shoulder.
“Stay back!” Ivy shouted.
She swung her dagger behind her without thinking.

“Ivy, it’s me!”
Cecelia caught her wrist and blocked the dagger, giving her a helpless look. “It’s okay.”
“Cece?!”
Ivy still looked shaken, but she quickly grabbed Cecelia’s hand and pulled her along as they ran.
“I think I heard Timothy shouting for help earlier! Something must’ve happened to them. Hendrick already ran ahead to help!”
“Really?”
Cecelia focused and listened. Sure enough, the distant sounds of fighting echoed from nearby.
She immediately pulled Ivy toward a narrow alley.
“This way.”
Ivy stumbled slightly but followed her without hesitation.
A few minutes later, they found the others.
Regina was supporting Timothy as he leaned against a wall.
Nearby, Hendrick, Ryan, and Matthew were locked in a fierce fight with a level 2 zombie.
Ivy ran straight toward Timothy. “Timothy, are you okay?”
“Ivy, hurry!” Regina cried anxiously. “Timothy’s arm got slashed!”
Cecelia stepped closer and took a look.
Timothy looked miserable.
His entire right arm was soaked in blood.
The wound stretched nearly eight inches long, and the muscle beneath it trembled faintly.
Sweat covered his face as he forced himself to endure the pain. His skin had turned pale after completely draining his ability.
Ivy immediately used her healing ability on him.
But the wound was far too large.
Even with her power, all she could do was stop the bleeding and reconnect the torn blood vessels.
By the time she finished, every bit of her ability energy had been drained.
