Chapter 43 Fresh Meat in the Fields

Matthew nodded and headed off to help. Regina went with him so they could start preparing dinner.

Cecelia narrowed her eyes and quietly watched Zera for a moment. The woman was still sitting inside the vehicle and hadn’t come out.

Cecelia had expected her to follow.

If Zera came along, that would be perfect. If she stayed behind, Cecelia wouldn’t get the chance she wanted.

A faint smile appeared on Cecelia’s lips. She already had a small plan forming in her mind. In a good mood, she turned to Ivy.

Ivy, do you feel like eating some meat?

Ivy blinked, a little confused. You mean sausage or something like that?

No,Cecelia said, shaking her head. I mean real meat.”

As she spoke, she pointed toward the open fields ahead.

I just spotted a few wild rabbits out there. If we’re lucky, we might be able to catch a couple.

Catch rabbits?Ivy looked doubtful. Aren’t rabbits famous for having several burrows? People say they’re hard to catch.

Cecelia shrugged lightly. No harm in trying.

Before Ivy could say anything else, Cecelia grabbed her dagger and jumped down from the roadside slope nto the field.

It was about five in the afternoon. The sun was still bright, so the entire field was clearly visible.

Hendrick quickly noticed Cecelia heading into the field. After watching her for a second, he walked over to

  1. vy.

What’s she doing?he asked.

Cece said she’s going to catch a rabbit,Ivy replied with a helpless smile. But honestly, I didn’t see any

abbits out there.”

She already caught one.” Hendrick’s calm voice sounded beside her.

vy stared at him in surprise and quickly looked toward the field.

Sure enough, Cecelia was already walking back. In her hand hung a large, plump rabbit.

Ivy’s eyes widened.

That was fast! It had only been two minutes since Cecelia went down there.

Hendrick folded his arms and explained calmly, She found the rabbit’s burrow. One happened to crawl out right when she got there.

That was a simple but useful trick for surviving in the wild.

From how smoothly Cecelia handled it, she clearly wasn’t new to catching rabbits.

By then, Cecelia had already walked back with the rabbit.

It was a male rabbit, thick and heavyprobably close to 11 pounds.

After the apocalypse virus spread, most infected creatures were humans, apes, and some large carnivores. Many of those animals had even mutated.

But small herbivores like chickens, ducks, rabbits, and field mice had remained unaffected.

Ten years into the apocalypse, these animals were still an important source of meat for survivors.

Places like Sylcreek once had families raising chickens, ducks, pigs, dogs, and cats.

Unfortunately, most of those animals had long since become food for the zombies.

Cece, that rabbit is huge!

Ivy’s eyes lit up when she saw it, and she smiled warmly. Looks like dinner will be much better tonight.

Yep.

Cecelia lifted the rabbit and waved it toward Hendrick. Can you do it? You know how to skin and gut it, right?

Hendrick gave her a flat look. And how would you know that?

Cecelia blinked innocently. Because when you kill zombies and dig out their crystals, you look pretty experienced.”

The moment she finished speaking, Cecelia moved her knife.

With one swift motion, she slit the rabbit’s throat. Then she casually stuffed the dying rabbit into Hendrick’s arms.

Hendrick had no words.

Whoa! Where did that rabbit come from?!

Ryan spotted the rabbit in Hendrick’s arms and nearly jumped. Hendrick, you went rabbit hunting without me? Why didn’t you call me? We could’ve caught more! That rabbit is huge!

Hendrick’s mouth twitched slightly. Without a word, he tossed the rabbit straight into Ryan’s arms. Skin it and roast it.

Huh?Ryan froze, completely confused. II don’t know how to do that.

Matthew had already noticed the rabbit. He grinned broadly. Perfect timing. Tonight’s dinner just got an upgrade!

Timothy walked over and looked at Hendrick. You caught it? Where did you find it? Let’s go check again.”

After all, one rabbit wasn’t really enough for seven people.

Hendrick simply tilted his head toward Cecelia.

Timothy paused. Cecelia caught it?

Yeah.

Hendrick had no interest in taking credit for it.

Ryan turned to stare at Cecelia with disbelief written all over his face. You? The laziest person here can catch rabbits? What did you dojust get lucky?

Cecelia narrowed her eyes slightly and pointed toward a spot in the field. See that hole over there? That’s a rabbit burrow. If you’re such a sore loser, go light a fire and smoke the hole. The rabbit will run right out. Easy catch. Then she added with a teasing smile, After all, one rabbit probably isn’t even enough to fill your stomach.

What did you just call me?!

Ryan instantly exploded, glaring at her like his eyes were on fire.

Cecelia crossed her arms and spoke calmly. Sore Loser. That’s your new nickname. Everyone here saw the bet. You lost but refused to admit it, so the name fits you perfectly.

You-!

Ryan was so angry he couldn’t even finish his sentence.
