Chapter 44 The Smell of Roasted Rabbit

Just as Hendrick suspected, Cecelia was probably hiding her true strength.

Timothy worked fast. Within minutes, he skinned the rabbit and cleaned out the organs. Then he slid the meat onto a long metal skewer and placed it over the small fire they had just started. The flames crackled softly as he brushed oil over the meat and slowly turned the skewer.

Cecelia watched his steady, practiced movements.

One look told her the rabbit would taste great.

Satisfied, she sat on the edge of the field and watched Ryan and Matthew chase rabbits across the grass.

But every now and then, her gaze drifted toward Zera’s car.

Inside the vehicle, Brian didn’t dare get out.

After seeing Cecelia kill the rabbit and Timothy calmly skin it and remove the organs, his courage had already faded. And everyone in the group carried guns.

These were clearly not people to mess with.

But beside him, Zera kept urging in a soft voice.

Brian, look. This is such a good chance. They’ve stopped to rest,” she said gently. You saw it earlier. Their vehicles are full of supplies. If we could join their team, we wouldn’t have to struggle so much looking for food.

She glanced toward the group roasting the rabbit. But the way they killed that rabbit just now was kind of cruel.”

Zera turned her head away as if she couldn’t bear to watch.

Brian frowned. They’re strong. They already refused to let us follow them before,he said quietly. If we walk over again now, we might anger them. This is the apocalypse. There’s no law anymore. If they wanted to kill us, it would be easy.

Simply putyou’re a pussy.

Zera sneered silently in her mind.

She had no one to blame but herself.

A month ago, she could have chosen any admirer she wanted. But somehow, she agreed to travel with Brian.

And he even brought his sister along.

That alone was annoying.

Worse, he insisted the three of them share one hotel room.

If Brian’s family didn’t own an old downtown apartment that was about to be demolishedan apartment worth several million dollars in compensationshe wouldn’t have bothered with a loser like him.

During the past month of the apocalypse, Brian had been useless.

All he did was run and hide. He had barely killed any zombies.

Now they had finally run into Timothy’s team.

There was no way she would let this chance slip away.

If she kept following Brian, she would either starve or turn into a zombie.

With that thought, Zera studied Timothy’s group again.

It was easy to see who held the most authority.

The tall man with the calm face clearly led the team. His movements while killing the rabbit were quick and clean. A gun rested at his waist. From her experience, he had probably been a soldier.

The second man had sharp, slightly upturned eyes. He looked clever and calculating. Definitely not someone easy to deal with.

Those two were the backbone of the team.

The other two men were different. One looked restless and impulsive. The other seemed simple and honest.

The restless one looked clueless about women. She might manage him, but it would take effort.

The honest one, however, looked like the easiest target.

Zera glanced toward Matthew in the field and smiled faintly.

That man had an ability. Even though he wasn’t the strongest, he was still her best chance to stay with the

group.

As for the three women

Except for the one who had killed the rabbit, the other two looked softhearted.

With a little effort, she could probably convince at least three people to let her stay.

But first, Zera glanced at Brian beside her and Amber in the back seat.

She made up her mind to get rid of the siblings.

Suddenly, as if thinking of something, her eyes filled with tears. She turned to Brian with a trembling

voice.

Brian, if you really don’t want to go, then I’ll go myself. I’d rather get beaten by them than starve to death or be eaten by zombies.”

As she spoke, she reached for the car door as if she were about to step out.

Zera!

Brian quickly grabbed her arm and stopped her. Relax,he said anxiously. Let’s wait a little longer. When it gets dark, I’ll go talk to them again. I promise, alright?

Zera looked at him through tearful eyes. Really? It’s almost dark and they’ve started eating.”
