49 The Same Old Trick

She glanced at Cecelia and Ivy as if she had been badly wronged. She lowered her head and slipped into the car.

Brian saw the sisters and rubbed his nose awkwardly, like a man with a guilty conscience. Then he hurried into the car after Zera.

Ivy watched the whole scene and sighed. “Gece, the apocalypse is hard. It’s even harder for girls to survive. Maybe Zera isn’t as bad as we think.”

Cecelia said nothing.

Of course, that little performance had been meant to win sympathy, especially from women like her and Ivy.

Cecelia knew the trick well.

In her previous life, when she was still in Brandon’s team, she had seen Sabrina use the exact same method.

Back then, she and Ivy had already joined the group. Ivy had a healing ability, and Brandon openly showed interest in her.

At first, Ivy was treated well.

Some of Brandon’s men joked every day, calling her the “future boss’s wife.”

Ivy was shy and thin–skinned. She couldn’t handle the teasing. Sometimes she even avoided Brandon.

Around that time, other women in the group began showing interest in him.

Brandon had chased Ivy for a long time without success. The team couldn’t afford to lose their only healer, so he couldn’t push her too hard. So, he started messing around with other women.

Ivy was kind and simple. She had never liked Brandon much to begin with, so she didn’t think much about what was happening.

But Cecelia noticed, and she wanted to warn Ivy.

The problem was, she was trapped in that body and couldn’t speak those words.

When Brandon grew bored of those women, he would send them on dangerous missions, feeding them to zombies.

Then he would return and flatter Ivy again.

Ivy kept focusing on improving her ability and continued ignoring him.

That only made Brandon more determined to conquer her.

From that moment on, he stopped chasing other women and focused entirely on Ivy.

Later, when trouble happened because of Cecelia, Brandon used it to pressure Ivy. He said if Ivy agreed to be with him, he would protect both sisters. No one in the team would dare bully them again.

Ivy believed him. She agreed to try dating him.

But she had no idea it was the start of a nightmare.

Brandon was never loyal.

The moment Ivy accepted him, he went back to flirting with other women. Whenever the team went out on missions, he secretly hooked up with them.

At one point, he even started eyeing Cecelia.

The only reason he didn’t act was because he feared angering Ivy–the team’s only healer.

Ivy knew nothing.

Brandon’s men all knew what he was doing, but when they returned, they still joked with Ivy. They called her Mrs. Wright and praised Brandon for being devoted.

They even claimed Brandon had turned down two women who seduced him to get his help that day.

Ivy was in her first relationship. Brandon was a good actor. With his men helping maintain the lie, she was completely fooled.

Everything stayed that way until Sabrina appeared.

That was the third year of the apocalypse.

By then, Ivy had been with Brandon for two years.

One day Brandon rescued Sabrina and brought her back.

Cecelia still remembered the scene clearly.

Sabrina lay in Brandon’s arms, her clothes torn, looking fragile and pitiful–like a girl who had suffered greatly in the ruined world.

Brandon said Sabrina was helpless and needed care.

Ivy knew how hard it was for a woman to survive alone in the apocalypse. Out of sympathy, she didn’t stop him.

But soon, Brandon and Sabrina grew closer and closer.

Ivy finally began to feel something was wrong.

Brandon explained that Sabrina looked like his sister. Seeing her reminded him of his sister, who had died early in the apocalypse. That was why he couldn’t help taking care of her.

But who takes care of someone by ending up in the same bed?

When the truth came out, Brandon immediately began making excuses.

He claimed he truly loved Ivy, Otherwise, why would he have tolerated her useless sister staying with the team for so long?

He said he had only made a small mistake–something many men do–and asked Ivy to be more understanding.

After all, Sabrina would only ever be a replacement for his sister. She could never threaten Ivy’s position as his girlfriend.

Ivy was stunned.

Heartbroken, she ran to Cecelia in tears and asked what she should do.

But Cecelia was trapped in that body. All she could do was watch as that version of herself gave Ivy terrible advice. She told Ivy to endure it.

No matter how many women Brandon had, as long as he liked Ivy, their position in the team would

remain safe.

Just remembering it made Cecelia grind her teeth in anger.

Even now, she wished she could go back and punch that past version of herself.

Eventually, she could only watch Ivy continue to be manipulated by Brandon.

Until the day Brandon found a healer stronger than Ivy.

That healer was brought back by Sabrina, and he happened to admire Sabrina.

His ability was two levels higher than Ivy’s.

To keep that new healer on the team, Brandon didn’t hesitate. He personally pushed Ivy into a swarm of

zombies.

And at that time, Cecelia–still trapped as a silent observer–stood with everyone else. Cold. Heartless.

She even blamed Ivy for deserving that. That was the only reason Brandon and Sabrina allowed her to remain on the team.
