Chapter 55 The Truth About the Candy
Finished
Everyone in the group knew Ivy had grabbed some candy from the supermarket earlier. Cecelia never bothered hiding it when she ate it either.
Even Ryan never complained about the sisters keeping it.
It was only a few bags of lollipops. He didn’t care about something that small.
But calling it stealing was different.
Their team could not afford to have a thief–or worse, a traitor–among them.
Which raised a new question. Why did Matthew have candy?
Did he steal Ivy’s and give it to Zera?
After hearing Zera’s accusation, Timothy frowned even harder.
Hendrick lifted a brow and glanced at Cecelia with quiet amusement. She stood there calmly, her expression cold–almost like a villain enjoying the scene.
He guessed she had seen something and was deliberately stirring the pot.
Zera, meanwhile, spoke cleverly. In just a few words, she pushed the blame away from herself while ooking pitiful and wronged.
Brian believed her right away. He turned to Timothy. “This must be a misunderstanding. Why don’t we call the others out and ask them? Zera would never steal. She’s a good girl.”
Amber heard that. Her eyes flickered slightly. She quietly stepped aside and said nothing.
Timothy nodded. “Ryan. Go call Matthew and the others.”
Okay.” Ryan hurried inside.
The kitchen was at the back of the house, next to a small yard.
Matthew, Regina, and Ivy were there preparing lunch and sorting through the supplies they had moved
inside.
When Ryan called them, they finally learned what had happened.
Matthew’s face changed immediately. He quickened his pace and headed out.
The moment he stepped outside, he saw Zera crying in Brian’s arms. She looked weak and fragile, the kind of sight that easily stirred sympathy.
Matthew’s brow twitched. He walked straight over.
Zera saw him coming. As she wiped her tears, she hid the smile threatening to appear on her lips.

Chapter 55 The Truth About the Candy
From how Matthew had treated her earlier, she was sure he would defend her.
With everyone watching, once he spoke up for her, Cecelia would look like the bully.
Matthew stepped forward and spoke plainly, “I gave it to her.”

“Earlier I was going out to move supplies. She suddenly collapsed and fell right into my arms. I had to catch her, so I helped her sit on the chair by the door.”
He paused briefly. “She said she felt dizzy from low blood sugar and asked if I had any candy. I remembered Ivy had some, so I asked Ivy for one.” He scratched the back of his neck. “It slipped my mind that I should’ve asked Cecelia permission.”
Then he turned to Cecelia and apologized sincerely. “Sorry, Cecelia. I should’ve checked with you first.”
Cecelia simply nodded. She waved her hand lightly, as if it didn’t matter. “I see. Alright. I forgive you.”
But then her gaze slowly shifted to Zera. She stared at Zera, her gaze intense. “So you asked Matthew for the candy.” Her eyes narrowed slightly. “But how did you know Matthew had candy? And you called him Mat. Does your boyfriend know about that? And didn’t you just eat bread and drink milk this morning? It’s barely noon. How did your blood sugar drop that fast?”
Zera froze.
ust moments ago she had been confident Matthew would take her side. She didn’t expect Matthew to explain every detail.
And Cecelia’s questions made it sound like she had deliberately tried to flirt with him.
‘I–I just didn’t feel well.”
Zera began to panic. She had no idea how to respond.
She never expected Cecelia to push back like this.
When she looked up, she saw something worse.
Timothy and the others looked at her differently now. Even Brian, who was holding her, had a strange expression on his face. His eyes were no longer as trusting as before.
How did this happen?
Zera felt a wave of panic.
For the first time, the situation had slipped completely out of her control,
What kind of guy was Matthew?
Why did he have to explain everything so clearly? And Cecelia…
Zera could feel it clearly. Cecelia was targeting her.
But why? She couldn’t figure it out.

All she knew was that if she didn’t find a way out soon, she would be in serious trouble.
“Zera, you…”
Brian looked shocked. He was about to question her. Suddenly, Zera closed her eyes and fainted.
“Zera!” Brian panicked. He tried to wake her, but she didn’t respond.
