Chapter 2
The ride back seemed unbearably long.
I leaned against the car window, drifting in and out of thoughts, memories of the past resurfacing.
Fifteen years ago, my parents died saving Richard, buried forever beneath an avalanche.
Since then, the Darkclaw Pack had taken me in.
When I first arrived at the Darkclaw Pack, I cried every night for my parents.
It was Harrison, two years older than me, who stayed up day and night, comforting me and helping me move past the grief of losing my parents.
From that moment on, I developed a confused affection for this older brother who wasn’t even related by
blood.
By the time adolescence arrived, I mistook that soft, aching closeness for something else-for love, the kind sung about in stories.
From then on, I clung to him even more, wanting the whole world to know how I felt.
Harrison never rejected me, always teasing me with a smile, “Willow, if you stick to me like this every day, how will you ever find your own mate?”
I would always look at Harrison seriously and say, “I’m only going to be your mate someday.”
And at that, Harrison would hook his pinky with mine, “It’s a promise then.”
That childish vow still echoed in my ears, but now, everything was different.
As we neared the pack house, I stepped out of the car and walked straight into the house.
Sophia, with a slightly eager expression, came to meet me and cautiously asked, “Willow, have you met Chloe yet?”
I nodded, “She’s lovely. They make a good pair.”
Sophia seemed to relax after carefully observing my response. With a heartfelt tone, she said, “Willow, although you’re not our biological daughter, we’ve always treated you like our own. Some things, though…”
I gently took Sophia’s hand, patting the back of it, “Luna, let’s leave the past where it belongs.”
Sophia let out a relieved sigh, then pulled me toward the living room, “You’re right, let’s not dwell on it. We’ve prepared a gift for you since you’re back this year.”
Sophia opened a velvet box, revealing a sapphire necklace.
I didn’t refuse and accepted it.

Even after seven years of distance, I knew Sophia’s care was genuine.
Smiling, she lifted the necklace and held it up to my neck to see how it looked.
I gathered my hair to the side.
Just then, a sharp voice cut through from the doorway, “Wait!”
Chloe stood there, her expression tight.
“Harrison bid thirty million for that necklace. And you’re just… giving it to her?”
Chloe looked at me coldly, “My fiancé bought it. I’d rather it not go to an outsider.”
Sophia looked caught, glancing between Chloe and me with visible unease.
I gently patted Sophia’s shoulder, set the necklace down, and then smiled at Chloe, “Since it’s your fiancé’s, I
won’t take it.”
Chloe let out a smug little hum, “At least someone here knows her place.”
“A pauper, kicked out by Darkclaw Pack, what right does she have to wear this necklace?”
The room fell into an awkward silence as Chloe’s words hung in the air.
What no one dared to bring up tonight was suddenly exposed, raw and open.
But Chloe’s words didn’t affect me at all.
Seven years had passed, and some things no longer had the power to hurt me.
