Chapter 3
Chapter 4
After the hand pulled Harrison away, it naturally wrapped around my shoulders.
As the familiar scent of cedar filled the air, my tense nerves instantly relaxed.
Maverick’s voice was calm and steady, “Sorry I’m late. Flight was delayed.”
I looked up and met his steady gaze.
Everyone in the room turned toward the Alpha who had just appeared.
Maverick was wearing a dark grey coat with a black turtleneck sweater, exuding an air of elegance and aloofness.
His presence seemed to lower the air pressure in the entire living room.
Harrison’s gaze lingered on Maverick’s hand around my shoulder, and he asked warily, “Who are you?”
Maverick didn’t immediately answer.
He looked down at the red marks on my wrist, his brow furrowing slightly, though it was barely noticeable.
“Does it hurt?” His voice was quiet, meant only for me.
I shook my head.
Only then did Maverick lift his gaze to the others, his tone steady and cool, “I’m Alpha Maverick Cross, Willow’s mate.”
His gaze swept across everyone present, eventually landing on Harrison, “Was it you who demanded an apology from my mate?”
Harrison stared at the man, who was a head taller than him, momentarily at a loss for words.
Chloe lifted her head from Harrison’s chest and sized Maverick up.
Handsome, imposing-but his clothes were understated, no visible labels. She drew her own conclusions.
She wiped away her tears and spoke with sarcasm, “So, you’re Willow’s mate. How convenient. Your mate just hit me. What do you think should be done about that?”
Maverick didn’t respond to her. Instead, he looked at Richard and Sophia.
He gave a small bow and said, “Mr. and Mrs. Cole, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I should’ve visited earlier. I apologize for the late intrusion today.”
Richard appraised Maverick. The young man seemed vaguely familiar, though Richard couldn’t place where he had seen him before.
For now, he chose to redirect.
Chapter A
“Now that you’re here, you should join us,” he said, his tone shifting to one of diplomacy. “We can address…
other matters after the ritual.”
Chloe huffed in displeasure, “Richard!”
Richard waved his hand dismissively, his tone firm, “The ritual comes first. We won’t delay it over this.”
Maverick took my hand, gently squeezing it to reassure me.
As we walked to the pack hall, the Darkclaw Pack members led the way, with Maverick and I falling a few steps behind.
Maverick quietly asked, “What did she say?”
I hesitated for a moment before softly replying, “She brought up my parents.”
Maverick’s steps faltered for a second, and his grip on my hand tightened slightly. “I see.”
His voice was calm, yet somehow it made me feel unexpectedly at ease.
The Darkclaw Pack chapel was solemn and sacred.
Richard led the group forward one by one to make their offerings and bow before the elders.
