Chapter 7
Maverick’s voice pulled me out of my memories, “Dinner’s ready.”
On the table was a simple meal, but the aroma was enticing.
As we ate, Maverick casually asked, “About what Chloe said today, what’s going on with that?”
My hand paused as I held my fork and knife, then I softly replied, “She said a lot of things. But the worst part
was that she implied I caused my parents’ death.”
Maverick’s eyes instantly turned cold.
I took a deep breath, “She also said that someone like me, a jinx, shouldn’t return to Darkclaw Pack.”
“She said if she were me, she’d be too ashamed to live in this world.”
With a sharp “clack,” Maverick slammed his cutlery on the table.
I had never seen him so angry.
Maverick took a deep breath, regaining his composure, “Sorry, I lost my temper.”
He picked up his cutlery again, “Let’s eat first.”
But I could still feel the intensity of his anger.
After dinner, Maverick went to his study to handle some work.
I took a shower, lay down on the bed, but sleep wouldn’t come.
The past, like a buried thorn, had begun to ache all over again.
I got up and walked to the study door, seeing Maverick on the phone.
“… Yes, I need everything on the Darkclaw Pack from seven years ago, especially details from that birthday
party.”

Everything you can find, I want it.”
Don’t alert Darkclaw Pack. Keep the investigation discreet.”
After hanging up the phone, Maverick turned around and saw me standing at the door.
He walked over, “Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
I asked, “Are you really going to investigate?”
He gripped my shoulders, looking at me seriously, “What happened seven years ago needs to be settled. I won’t let it keep haunting you.”
He pulled me into his arms and kissed my forehead, “Go to sleep now. I’ll take care of everything.”

That night, I slept more soundly than I had in years.
In the following days, Maverick was busy with the investigation while I wandered through places I used to
live.
A week later, he had answers.
Maverick placed a stack of documents in front of me, cleared his throat, and said, “Harrison was indeed
drugged, but it wasn’t by you. It was his cousin, Lily.”
Lily?
I frowned, recalling a vague memory of someone like that.
He continued, “Lily had been infatuated with Harrison since she was young. That night, she intended to drug
him and take advantage of the situation.”
“But what she didn’t expect was that his first reaction was to get close to you…”
I felt a rush of mixed emotions. I never imagined the truth would be like this!
As we were discussing it, my phone suddenly rang.
It was Harrison calling.
I hesitated for a moment, then answered.
He sounded weary, “Willow, can we meet? I want to talk about what happened seven years ago.”
I glanced at Maverick.
He nodded, “Go ahead. Hear him out. But be careful, and call me if you need to.”
