Chapter 2
Guilt flickered across Silas’s face before he casually sent Vivian off to get herself some cake.
When he looked back at me, his expression softened with almost painful sincerity.
“You’re an Alpha’s daughter. You’ve attended banquets like this all your life. But Vivian is just an ordinary
she-wolf from a poor family.”
“This might be the only time in her life she ever stands in the center of a werewolf gala.”
I lowered my gaze as a sting tightened my chest. “You know I rarely ask you for anything. You can live as you
please every other day. Why did it have to be today of all days?”
Why did he choose the one moment that determined the rest of my life to abandon me.
Silas saw my hurt and tried again, this time with forced patience. “Tonight is Vivian’s graduation. It marks the end of my sponsorship. I promised her a night she would never forget.”
My fate was sealed by his moment of charity. Listening to him, I realized he truly did not understand what
the Moonlily meant on this night.
I tried one last time. “Silas, you know…”
My words stopped halfway when Vivian reappeared at our side with a plate of cake.
“Freya, did I ruin something for you?” Her voice was soft and perfectly trembling. “Please don’t blame Silas. I
was the one who begged him.”
Vivian’s helplessness made Silas’s patience snap. His tone toward me grew sharp. “It’s just a flower. I can
give you another one.”
He reached toward a nearby vase and thrust a common garden rose at me.
“Stop overreacting. You never cared about these things. You were always the quiet one, never fighting or
competing. That version of you was my favorite.”
I curled my fingers around the rose. It was beautiful and harmless. Every thorn had been clipped away for the
comfort of those who touched it.
But the Moonlily, the symbol of purity, loyalty, and a Luna’s worth, he refused to give me. He must have
believed I did not deserve it.
The laughter around us sharpened in my ears. My inner wolf paced within me, her senses sharpening the
cruel whispers into serrated blades.
“A hybrid mutt dares show up at the Bonding Gala. Even a nameless omega from the slums outranks her.”
“Did you hear she started clinging to Silas when she was seven? And once, she was savaged by rogues in the
borderlands, left for dead to save his skin.”

“They said not a single patch of skin on her came back unscarred.”
“Filthy bloodline. Filthy body. Silas is the Alpha heir. He probably keeps her around as a plaything.”
Their gossip swept through the hall, harsh and effortless.
They thought I had become filthy and fallen. They had no idea I awakened my white wolf that night and tore
those rogues apart piece by piece.
I heard every word. And Silas, the future Alpha, heard them too. One cold glare from him silenced the cluster
of she-wolves instantly. They dropped their heads, trembling.
Vivian chose that moment to speak again, her voice as gentle as a sigh.
“Freya, I truly am sorry. I only wanted one special night because you always seem so composed and noble. I
didn’t know it mattered so much to you.”
Noble. I nearly laughed aloud. If I were noble, would anyone dare talk about me that way.
I looked at Silas, my voice barely steady. “Silas, you know better than anyone how miserable life is for me in
the pack.”
