Approved for Her Rejected for Me novel Chapter 65

Chapter 7

I barely remembered the ride.

Everything felt heavy and distant. I couldn’t open my eyes, but I knew I was being held.

One arm was locked around my waist, firm and possessive, like whoever carried me was afraid I might vanish. Fingers moved slowly through my hair. A blanket was adjusted around my shoulders with deliberate

care.

When I finally woke, daylight filtered faintly through the curtains.

The cut in my palm had almost completely healed. My wolf had done its job, even if the rest of me still felt weak. My vision remained slightly unfocused.

Hugo Shaw sat at the edge of the bed.

He leaned down and pressed his lips against my forehead, testing for fever the old-fashioned way.

“Temperature’s normal,” he said quietly. “Good. I’d hate for all that effort to go to waste.”

I tried to thank him, but my throat burned. The faint metallic taste of blood lingered, and no sound came out.

He reached for a damp swab and carefully brushed moisture over my lips.

His composure never slipped in front of the pack. With me, it always did. I could see the exhaustion in his

eyes. The anger too.

“I warned you about him,” Hugo said, voice low but steady. “You didn’t want to hear it. You had to learn the hard way.”

I frowned.

After years apart, I wasn’t about to lie here and let him scold me like a reckless pup.

He caught the look immediately and stopped. Instead, he rose and instructed the housekeeper to prepare broth to help my throat.

The exhaustion dragged me under again.

When I woke the second time, it was fully dark outside.

Hugo had relocated his work into my room. His laptop sat open on the side table, screen glowing softly. He hadn’t left.

I watched him for a moment before he sensed it and looked up.

“You’re awake.” He stood immediately and poured water. “Why didn’t you call me? Are you in pain? I can have the healer come back.”

I shook my head and reached for the glass.

He didn’t hand it over.

I swallowed against the dryness. “Can you help me?”

That was all it took.

He moved closer, adjusted the pillows behind my back, and brought the glass to my lips with steady hands.

It felt strangely intimate. My ears warmed. I avoided his eyes.

A quiet laugh came from him.

When I looked up, I found him watching me in that same unguarded way he used to.

“You used to cling to me when you were younger,” he said softly. “You wouldn’t even drink water unless I

gave it to you.”

The memory hit me before I could stop it.

The year I awakened my wolf, I insisted on leaving my birth pack to see the world beyond our territory.

My father didn’t trust the rest of the realm. So he sent me to the one man powerful enough to keep me safe.

Hugo Shaw. The Alpha King of the Southern Realm.

He was only six years older than me, yet I had to call him Uncle Hugo in front of others.

To the world, he was ruthless. Untouchable. The kind of Alpha who commanded silence without raising his

voice.

With me, he was different.

He oversaw my training personally. He reviewed my meals. He checked security reports himself. When I got sick, he postponed a pack meeting to sit beside my bed.

I thought that meant something.

The night before I returned home after finishing my travels, I confessed to him.

He rejected me.

Not gently.

Not with hesitation.

He ordered me out of the pack house and shut me out of his life.

I shifted that night and ran until my lungs burned. I crossed half the Southern Realm just to put distance

between us.
