Johnny glanced at the untouched breakfast Madison had refused and figured she really didn't know how to appreciate good things. But he didn't let it show.
He packed up the coffee and corn dogs before driving toward Quinn Group.
While driving, he made an effort to engage in small talk. "After we split yesterday, I had the finance department pull the records for the last few years. When you get in today, you can dive straight into the accounts."
"Okay," Madison said flatly, barely looking up as she scrolled through her phone. Her chat with Sam filled the screen.
He still hadn't replied after the whole night, so she kept sending new messages, hoping he would finally respond.
"Sam, I swear I didn't betray you. I already found a lead on the leak. Just give me a few more days, and I'll prove I'm innocent.
"Sam…"
Madison sent message after message but received no response. She pressed her lips together, trying to swallow the ache crawling up her chest.
Before she could steady herself, Johnny's panicked shout exploded in her ear. "Maddie, look out!"
Madison snapped her head up just as he lunged toward her. Her face drained, and she shoved him back on instinct.
But out of the corner of her eye, she saw a van barreling straight at them through the windshield. The crash hit a heartbeat later, shaking the entire car.
The impact flung Madison sideways, and her head slammed against the window.
Right before she blacked out, she vaguely registered Johnny yelling something and even touching her with his filthy hands. She frowned, trying to snap at him not to touch her, but everything went dark before she could speak.
Johnny watched her go limp, and whatever affection he had shown vanished in a second. He sucked in a breath through his teeth and scowled.
"Who did Kaitlyn even hire? They hit way too hard," he grumbled under his breath, then spotted someone rushing toward the car from outside.
He immediately pretended to pass out and collapsed against Madison. Moments later, he heard the door yank open, and someone pulled both of them out of the wreck.
An ambulance arrived soon after.
Once Johnny realized Madison was being taken to the hospital with him, he let himself crash on the gurney and fell asleep. He had no idea she was being sent there too, and she would soon be quietly taken away.
…
Half an hour later, Kaitlyn shook Johnny awake in a hospital room. The second he opened his eyes, he turned toward the other bed.
It was empty.
He grabbed Kaitlyn's wrist, his voice strained. "Where's Madison? Wasn't she supposed to be here with me?"
Johnny and Kaitlyn had mapped it all out. After the staged crash, he and Madison would be brought to the hospital, and Kaitlyn would make sure they were put in the same room.
