Madison's voice kept shrinking until it was almost gone. The tears she had managed to hold back spilled over again.
Janet frowned, unsure how to comfort her.
Madison wasn't wrong. Even when Sam lost his temper before, he had never gone that far. Was he really about to cut Madison off for good this time?
The thought barely formed when Madison spoke again, her tone suddenly steady. "Forget it. I'm done overthinking. No matter what happens, I'm not leaving Sam."
Janet realized she didn't need to figure out how to talk this idiot down. Madison could talk herself down just fine.
While her thoughts kept spinning, Janet pulled into the parking garage of her downtown luxury apartment.
Madison passed out the second she hit the mattress. She couldn't tell if it was from running around all day or from the way her nerves finally settled after she had made up her mind.
She slept straight through until morning and only woke up when her phone started ringing. Still half-asleep, she answered with her eyes closed.
"Hello?"
Johnny's irritated voice filled her ear. "Maddie, why aren't you home? We agreed that I'd pick you up this morning and take you to Quinn Group."
The last bit of grogginess left Madison. She pushed herself upright, phone in hand, and lowered her voice.
"Something came up last night, so I crashed at a friend's place. Just go to Quinn Group first. I'll head over later by myself."
Johnny tensed the second he realized she wasn't going with him. "Maddie, aren't you coming with me? Then tell me where your friend lives and I'll pick you up. You sound like you're still in bed, so I'll bring you breakfast."
Madison narrowed her eyes, a sharp glint flickering through them.
Johnny, who never spent a single dollar unless he absolutely had to, was suddenly offering to buy breakfast? There was no way he wasn't up to something.
Even after thinking it through, she still agreed. "Fine. Come and pick me up."
She gave him an address right at the corner near where Janet lived. Then she ended the call and went to wash up.
Once ready, Madison stepped out and found the place completely quiet. Janet clearly wasn't up yet.
Madison was about to leave a note and slip out when the master bedroom door clicked open.
Janet shuffled out, eyes half-closed, her pajama top slipping off one shoulder. "Why are you up so early? The flight route doesn't even launch until this evening."
A black Mercedes idled at the corner. When Johnny spotted Madison, he rolled down the window and called out with a grin, "Maddie, over here."
As soon as she settled in, he handed her a coffee and two corn dogs stuffed inside a flimsy, grease-stained paper bag.
Then came the sugar-coated line he had rehearsed a thousand times. "I know you love corn dogs and coffee from that place near campus, so I went out of my way to get them. They're still hot, so eat up before they get cold."
"How thoughtful. Too bad I already ate. You can save it for lunch."
There was no way she was touching anything Johnny or Kaitlyn handed her now. For all she knew, they had already slipped something into it.
Madison had also told him more than once that she hated eating greasy junk first thing in the morning, yet he brought her the same combo every time.
In her last life, she never understood why. When she finally lost everything, she figured it out.
The two items together barely cost anything.
