Madison's eyes went cold as anger flickered in her gaze.
"You're saying Sam wants to take over Quinn Group?" she asked, her voice cool and cutting.
There was a flash of derision in her gaze.
Johnny, on the other end of the line, didn't catch the change in her tone at all. He assumed she was buying it, and his voice softened.
"Maddie, don't worry. You've got me now. Once we get married, he can't control you anymore. You can take the company back, and I'll run it for you. With me in your corner, he'll never push you around again."
Madison clenched her fists, shutting her eyes in pain.
What a joke. The man who had humiliated her and driven her to a miserable end in her last life was going on about justice and promising to protect her.
And the "villain" he claimed was scheming to take Quinn Group, the big fool Sam, had walked right into a trap and died to save her in that life.
No, she was the fool. How else had she let Johnny and Kaitlyn con her and keep Sam at arm's length?
When Madison opened her eyes again, her gaze turned to ice. Sooner or later, she'd have those two on their knees, begging her and Sam for forgiveness!
But the time hadn't come yet.
She steadied herself, her expression cold. She let a hesitant note creep into her voice as she said, "But after my parents passed, Sam's been the one running Quinn Group. I don't think anyone's better suited to handle the company."
Johnny couldn't help but mutter under his breath, "Useless."
Kaitlyn took the phone from him. "Maddie, it's me, Kate. I'm sorry about yesterday. I shouldn't have shown up with a crowd and upset you. We're best friends.
"I can't just stand by and watch you get played by Sam, that two-faced snake. You're not his pet. He doesn't get to control you or tell you not to see Johnny.
"He says Johnny only got close to you to steal Quinn Group and your family's inheritance? Sounds like he's the guilty one! Don't be afraid. Johnny and I are at Quinn Group right now, and we'll help you take the company back."
Madison frowned. Then, it came back to her. In her last life, Kaitlyn messed around, didn't graduate, and couldn't find a job.
Kaitlyn broke down in front of Madison, saying she couldn't go on. Madison couldn't stand it and brought Kaitlyn on at Quinn Group.
Later, when Madison started dating Johnny, he asked to join Quinn Group too, saying he wanted to be closer to her. With Kaitlyn talking her into it, Madison agreed.
She never expected her kindness and goodwill to become the leverage they used against her.
Madison froze. When she realized he'd heard everything, panic flooded her. "You've got it all wrong. I was just—"
Sam shot to his feet. "Madison, if you want to take back Quinn Group, fine. But if it's for Johnny, not happening! And stop wasting your time putting on a show for me."
His hands hung at his sides. His gaze, a thin line of anger in it, raked over Madison's face and settled on her lips. So the kisses she'd started were nothing but an act.
Sam's expression hardened. He didn't spare her another look and strode out.
"Sam!" Madison called, scrambling to her feet, but all she saw was the unyielding set of his shoulders as he strode off.
So in his mind, everything she'd done lately was just to take back Quinn Group for Johnny?
Madison seethed with frustration. This was on those two bastards!
She tightened her grip on her phone. The call was still connected, and Johnny's voice came through. "Maddie, about the phone…"
Madison let out one humorless laugh after another. Done playing nice, she demanded, "Why are you with Kaitlyn? Aren't you using her phone as if it were yours? You two are a thing, right? Stay the hell away from me!"
She hung up and blocked Johnny's number immediately.
