Janet had no idea what Johnny and Kaitlyn were up to. When they said they never got a chance to explain because Janet had ended the call too soon, she was done with both of them.
"Fine. Since Madison isn't here, I'm leaving." Janet turned and walked out.
Neither Johnny nor Kaitlyn tried to stop her. Once Janet stepped into the hallway, Johnny shot Kaitlyn a look. Kaitlyn got it right away, stayed quiet, and followed.
Janet hadn't made it far. She stood by the elevator as a slow, creeping realization hit her.
Sam had already left for Marowa that night. He had blocked all of Madison's contact info and packed up every one of her things from Northcrest Villa. That was a clean break.
In that case, why would Sam rush to transfer Madison somewhere else the second something happened?
Still, Madison had been the one he had cared about for more than ten years. There was no way he could just stop caring about her overnight.
Janet stood there, torn and uneasy.
The elevator doors slid open, but she didn't get in. She tightened her grip on her handbag and headed for the balcony at the end of the hallway instead.
Janet planned to call Sam and find out where Madison was. If he really had taken her, that was fine.
But if he hadn't, that meant Johnny and Kaitlyn were involved. Janet wasn't going to let either of them get away with it.
Kaitlyn saw Janet turning toward the balcony and felt like luck had finally thrown her a bone. She hurried after her, staying quiet and out of sight.
On the balcony, Janet pulled up Sam's contact and called him. It took a long time before someone finally picked up.
"Ms. Burke."
Sam's voice sounded rough, like he had just woken up.
Janet didn't notice and said hurriedly, "Mr. Goodwin, Maddie was in a car accident. I'm at the hospital right now and—"
"Ms. Burke, tell Madison she can stop with these little games." He cut her off, his voice cold enough to sting.
Janet froze, then rushed to explain. "Mr. Goodwin, I'm not lying. Madison really was in a car accident. She and Johnny were heading to Quinn Group this morning to check their books when a car hit them.
"But when I got to the hospital, Johnny said you'd already taken her."
Sam didn't buy a word of it.
Madison had gone to Quinn Group to check their books? He wasn't trying to sell her short, but could she even make sense of those numbers? To him, it just sounded like another way to tug at his sympathy.
