The highway was so dark. It felt like the world disappeared beyond the headlights as three SUVs moved toward the airport in tight formation.
Madison sat alone in the SUV in the middle of the convoy, wedged between the other two.
She had turned away everyone who had tried to ride in the back with her, so it was just her and the driver, Andrew Howell, with Joyce up front in the passenger seat.
The air felt heavy and still.
Madison wasn't bothered. She stared out the window, her brain cycling through every possible move. She mapped out every scenario she could think of and decided to go through with it.
"Joyce," she said.
When Joyce turned her head from the passenger seat, Madison shot out a hand, grabbed her by the collar, and yanked her close.
A cold glint flickered as Madison drove a syringe of anesthetic into the side of Joyce's neck.
It happened too fast to process. Even when Joyce realized what was going on and tried to fight back, it was already over.
Afraid that one dose wouldn't be enough, Madison emptied both shots. Joyce went unconscious within seconds.
Andrew caught everything in the rearview mirror and instinctively reached to stop the car.
Madison wasn't about to let that happen. If the car stopped, she would be a sitting duck again, and whatever little freedom she still had would be gone.
She shoved Joyce aside and lunged for Andrew.
He jolted and snapped, "Are you out of your mind?"
He twisted to dodge Madison's grab, and the sudden shift turned his attempt to brake into a violent jerk on the wheel.
The SUV swerved out of formation, breaking away from the other two. The cars in front and behind reacted instantly, moving in sync like they were ready to box them in.
Madison saw it from the corner of her eye as she fought for control, a wild, all-or-nothing look rising in her expression. She would rather die than get shipped to Mudward Isle!
At that moment, a cargo truck barreled toward them from the opposite lane.
Andrew saw it too, his face draining of color. "Ms. Quinn, let go or we're both dead!"
Madison didn't seem to hear him and yanked the wheel harder.
At the same moment, the truck driver spotted their SUV lurching into his lane and slammed the horn, warning them to return to their lane.
Madison didn't react. She clamped onto the wheel and refused to let go.
