"Sam, you've already looked into everything. You know it wasn't me. Could you take back what you said before? I don't want to leave you. I won't leave you." Madison stared at Sam, her eyes full of hope.
Every time she imagined a future where she had nothing to do with him, it felt like someone dragging a knife across her heart. The pain was sharp and unbearable.
Sam almost gave in under that look. For a moment, he truly wanted to say yes. But the second the words reached his lips, reason forced them back down.
After everything that had happened, he knew Madison couldn't stay by his side anymore. And it wasn't just because William had his eye on her. He couldn't keep letting her tug at his emotions like this. It had drained him dry.
Madison didn't know any of that. All she saw was Sam standing there, silent and unreadable. Panic swept through her, especially when she remembered going to Northcrest Villa and finding all her belongings packed up on his orders.
Her composure finally cracked. Ignoring her injuries, she threw the blanket aside and tried to climb out of bed to go to him.
But she was still sick. The moment her feet hit the floor, the room spun, and her body swayed.
Sam's expression changed at the sight of that. His body moved faster than his thoughts. By the time he came back to his senses, he was already right beside her, steadying her before she could fall.
"What are you doing? You just started getting better and now you're trying to push yourself again?" he barked.
Madison's eyes reddened as she stared at Sam, aggrieved. "I'm not pushing myself. It's just that you've been ignoring me."
She grabbed the hem of his shirt, her eyes brimming with tears. "Sam, please don't push me away. I'll be good. I'll listen to you. Just don't leave me."
When Sam looked down at those pleading eyes, the resolve he had been clinging to wavered again. His lips parted as if he wanted to say something—right before her stomach let out a loud growl.
The sound jolted him back to reality. He dodged the moment, saying, "You're hungry, aren't you? I'll go get you something to eat."
But anyone paying attention would see the impatience in his eyes. He would much rather be back at Sam's side than babysitting a spoiled heiress. Unfortunately, Sam sent him.
Madison didn't need him to say more. She understood perfectly. Sam was avoiding her, and the realization made her chest ache.
They had already proven she wasn't the one who caused the leak, so why was he still keeping her at arm's length?
She even had a bad feeling. If she couldn't change his mind now, the distance between them would only grow once they returned home.
Making up her mind, she lifted her chin stubbornly and said, "I'm not eating. Take it away."
Brett stared at Madison, who was throwing a tantrum. At that moment, he wanted nothing more than to walk right out, but he couldn't.
