Maybe Sam's encouragement had worked, because Madison pored over the materials with unusual focus.
Time slipped by, and before they knew it, it was already noon.
When Sam finished the paperwork on his desk, he glanced at Madison out of habit and caught her serene, stunning profile. For a second, he lost his train of thought.
When had it started? When had every meeting with her turned into nothing but endless arguments?
It seemed to have started when Kaitlyn showed up.
At that thought, Sam narrowed his eyes into a dangerous squint. He tapped his fingers against the folder, as he did whenever he was deep in thought.
He'd planned to use Madison's current dislike of Kaitlyn to drive Kaitlyn away. But on second thought, he decided not to make a move yet.
After all, it wasn't the first time Madison had clashed with both Kaitlyn and Johnny.
Back then, Sam had quietly planned to get them out of the picture so they couldn't keep deceiving Madison. When Madison found out, she stormed over and picked a fight with him.
"Sam, you're just my old neighbor. What gives you the right to meddle in my life?
"Sam, stay out of my business from now on!
"Sam…"
Her words, laced with hatred and disgust, kept echoing in Sam's head until his breathing grew heavy. It felt like his heart was being torn apart.
After a long moment, he finally pulled himself together. His gaze on Madison went cold and unreadable.
As if sensing it, Madison looked up and met his guarded eyes. She froze.
When she snapped out of it, she asked, puzzled, "Sam, what's wrong?"
Benjamin pushed the door open and stepped in, all business. "Mr. Goodwin, Ms. Quinn's ex-boyfriend is here. He wants to see her."
Sam's expression hardened at the mention of the word "ex-boyfriend". He wasn't in any position to say anything, just leveling Benjamin with a look that could cut glass.
Benjamin's scalp prickled. He dropped his gaze, sheepish. Even so, he didn't regret how he'd phrased it.
Sam slowly looked away from Benjamin and turned to Madison. "Are you going to see him?"
Madison refused without a second thought. "No."
She knew that after cutting ties with Johnny and Kaitlyn, neither of them would take it lying down. They would definitely hassle her.
Even if she refused to meet them, they wouldn't give up. That was when she began to herd them, step by step, into the trap she had set.
Just as Madison expected, Johnny made a scene at Goodwin Corp's front desk the moment he learned she'd refused to see him.
